Lie

Lie

A Poem by Shannon Miller

The words rolled off your tongue
Day after day you spoke them
Sweet like honey but
I know you didn’t mean them
As I know you didn’t understand them

Were you lying to us both
Or did you really believe those words?
Did you believe you meant them?
Because you didn’t follow through
And you left me grappling with the truth

You said them with such ease
Somewhere in my core I knew
It was too good to be true
You couldn’t be saying them to me
Not when we were only beginning

But you said them every day
It was easy while things were simple
No need to fight to prove it
Simply listen and show concern
And let me soak up all your lies

Foolish of me to trust those words
Erroneous of me to believe in you
Leaning into every word
Building a house without foundation
Not seeing the cracks in the walls

And then your lies were laid bare
My misplaced trust illuminated
Emptiness in those words revealed
Leaving nothing for us to stand on
And the house fell all around us

I stayed among the scattered shambles
Searching for any answers
Sifting through dust and splinters
Until I found the origin of the cracks
The cause of the unstable foundation

Hollow words spoken every day
Phrases uttered haplessly
When the meaning was not understood
Words that left my own lips
But never without heart behind them

A simple truth
An outrageous lie
It’s seems simple now
That the cause for it all
Was “I love you”
