The Nature of a Sphere

The Nature of a Sphere

A Story by Lorraine

An essay about me in comparison with a ball.

A ball's value comes from within.  It rolls.  It bounces.  These are made possible by the air inside it.  The air gives the ball a chance to bring failure and success to several athletes.  With one incredible pitch, it can make the whole world yell like lunatics.  With one successful three-point shot, it can bring victory to a country.  A ball has many uses.  It rolls.  It bounces.  It is round, that is why.

Though it doesn't choose its own direction and though it remains forever manipulated, it is very special because it seems to move on its own.  Whenever a ball rolls down an inclined plane, it looks so carefree for the force that leads it downward cannot be seen.  Through the limited sight of a human's eye, a ball truly moves on its own accord like a free being.  It doesn't go against the flow.  It goes with the flow.

    I am a ball.

I am round and can never be truly determined from a single point of view.  It takes time before one can see every angle of my being.  It takes time to explore the unexplored part of my nature, and even with so much time, chances are, some parts may be overlooked.

    I am a ball.

I roll along the path that God has set me along through fate.  I go with the flow.  I have accepted my imaginary freedom as an inevitable part of being alive.  I accept the freedom I seem to have while bearing in mind that whatever takes place are things that the Lord allowed to happen.  I cannot control anything--some else does.

    I am a ball.

Something within me—contentment, happiness, acceptance—keep me round.  They keep me rolling.  They keep me strong amidst all the harsh bumps I receive now and then.  What's inside me is what gives me value.

    I am a ball.

I can bring success or failure.  I can spread happiness or sadness.  I give detail to the world.

I am a ball.  I can be any ball.

A little step can turn me flat, but even so, I dare not surrender from the game of life.  I am a Ping-Pong ball.  The fact that I am small and fragile constantly reminds me of unfaltering protection.  I am rest-assured that my owner will forever take care of me.

I am a ball.  I am a white billiard ball.

I can be hard and firm.  I keep my emotions tactfully controlled that I may never fall on any pit.

    I am a ball.

I may appear in different sizes and colors.  I may be blue, pink, green yellow, or a mixture of every color.  I am a beach ball.  Whatever size or color I take, I keep myself always under the sun.

    I am a ball.

It doesn't matter if I'm imperfect.  It doesn't matter if I don't know what the future holds.  I am being controlled; I don't have to worry about anything.  Despite being manipulated, I am contented because like a ball on an inclined plane, I will never stop rolling.  So long as I am moving, I know I'm not alone--someone's guiding me.  And until I see that someone, I will savor my imaginary freedom

Above all else, I know I will never be just a ball.  I am God’s handmade ball.

It was done of few months ago and I only posted this now to prevent extinction. I think it's the best way I can describe myself. What do you think of this?

Wow. Interesting perspective. I would never have been able to identify myself with such a unique physical form. I love how you compared yourself to so many different types of spheres--from fragile to firm. It does express our weaknesses and strengths well. Very interesting and unique writing. :) Nice job.

A ball but not just a ball... a great metaphor you use. This is so clever and thoughtful. I agree with Sam, your insight is extraordinary given your age. I love the idea of gathering experience as you roll/bounce on by, just try and avoid those dogs :)

Seriously though its not often you read something so unique here. The structure is perfect, and you capture the idea so well. Great job!

How very clever and imaginative, Lorraine. Even though quite young, your insight and understanding of this world is keen. Bravo for writing such a fine story.

I think this is wonderful. It reads more like poetry than an essay. It has a gentle flow to a thought provoking ending..."I will savour my imaginary freedom"....is it all an illusion??? I can't say anything else that Nicole hasn't already said...just wonderful. You have a talent my friend!
I think I'm a baseball...leather wrapped with lots of stitches and tightly wound on the inside, always taking hits but will be a homerun for someone, someday...see?.. thought provoking!
Thank you.

I went speechless for a while. I tasted and savored every thought presented in it. This was written with wisdom. Everything has been well-said. I, too, am a ball. This is just beautiful!
