Winter Slumber

Winter Slumber

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer
"

the close of fall

"

My painted autumn came to an end as

the breath of God turned morning dew to a lacey rime

Gale force winds stomped out the sun

and just for spite brought lightning and the thunder.

Heavens hail battered the earth below,

as slowly it turned to an icy snow.

The azure sky was tucked away

as billowing clouds came my way.

An eiderdown of ice was formed,

as fall's last bloom became tightly bound

now encased in its crystal tomb

for a lengthy winter slumber

silence engulfs winter's first plunder.

I feel the howling wind, the cold, the damp, the ice and then the snow.
What a picture you portray with just a few well chosen words!
By the way do you mean `encases the ground' ?
I especially like the way you use:
`as falls last bloom
is wrapped in its winter slumber. '

This is stunning & dynamic imagery, but what intrigues me the most is how the pacing & rhythm of the lines seem to resemble the slow thundering sensation of winter coming on. Exquisitely chosen rhymes & unusual word choices always delight me! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Amen, sista! *smile*
This piece makes you seem as a part of the wind all knowing all watching. Way to be in touch with mother Earth!

This was quite possibly the best nature poem I've laid my eyes on in months. I was able to read it many times and find a strange delight in the shear mastery!

Mastery makes a supremely readable poem.

And you write supremely real and easy poems. So all is as it should be!

Awe... I love it! Sooo visual. Roarke talked about your ability to capture the scene and make it reincarnate on the page. I think that really portrays your talent, Cherrie. That's why I enjoy your poetry so much. I don't have to be one to be caught up into the reverie. Totally a beautifully rendered vista.

Awesome! I love the picture you paint in this and I love your use of words! I'm a journalism major so seeing a variety of words is a huge plus for me. This poem isn't even very long but it says a lot. I really love how you say the azure sky was tucked away. Nice use of verbs! haha. :D

Living in a subtropical climate, I had forgotten about the many 'faces of winter water', as someone once called it.
Until just now that is....
My feet are cold.

Seasonal transitions are an infinite source of material to illustrate from. Being able to capture it and make it reincarnate on the page is a talent. Cherrie has such talent. I'm going to have to go put on a sweat shirt and jacket now...

I really enjoyed the rhythm of this poem. I like living in Souther California, but I have never experienced a real winter for any length of time. Your poem gave me a lovely touch of what a real winter is like.
