Left in the spring

Left in the spring

A Poem by Island Hippy
"

Listening to Sharon Jones & The Dapkings... inspired.

"

I left my island love in the spring
abandoned on the number 19 bus
just a hope and dream
away from cold relief
it was never really enough

swiped some dirty moonshine
a pack of Lucky Strike'
papa never ever woke in time
it was the only way
to survive the night
an amber bedtime lullaby
there was a groovin & shakin
hustlin' players and breaking
even; always breaking even

I went back again in the spring
my own car now, 19 was a bust
I traded moonshine for fine wine
learned to flip life on a dime
false smiles making fairytales
there was a groovin & shakin
hustlin' herself and breaking
promises; always breaking promises.

Mahalo, I appreciate your lovely comment. Izzy
Aloha Izzy ohana! I love the music and rhythm of your poems. A journey on a bus, and through time...so original! Some things change and some remain the same. "Hustlin', groovin' and shakin" along. You rock girl!

You're welcome!
It's funny how we never forget when we left. The weather, the faces and places that were a constant part of our lives and all the little things that linger in the mind, long after we have changed venues and perspectives.
This has a very loose and free feel to it, like all it took was to pack a bag and buy a ticket somewhere, but between all those lines are the thoughts that made you change and branch out, looking for freedom and adventure. It is a feeling I know well. There is nothing better than deciding over your morning coffee to grab a bag and head for the hills. Good for you for having the bravery to see that there is more to the world than our own back yards. And now that spring has sprung, those thoughts of home come rushing back, reminding us also that roots grow deep and will always call us back, one more time.
Love the breaking even and breaking promises lines, at least breaking even ain't losing :)

Lol... I would be one of those laughing in secret and scolding myself for it.

"I traded moonshine for fine wine

This has a wistful tone ... I like the soft rhythmic quality in this. Quite smooth.

Aloha John, I appreciate your comment and time. Mahalo. Izzy
Hola Izzy, i love this piece ~ feels like a movie character narration.. protagonist leaves home and returns different to a place that remains the same, yet changed by her absence alone. nice breezy writing :)

'false smiles making fairytales ~ there was a groovin & shakin ~ hustlin' herself and breaking ~
promises; always breaking promises. ' Oops maybe.. but reality holding fast.

Smiling and maybe wrongly, imagining you doing the same whilst creating this post. You've set to wmusic, set to mood and the result is how life goes.. changing, remembering, changing some more and going back to where you wre but still the same.. in a strange, more rhythmic way,, in all senses, Perhaps.
