Author's Note

Monsters contains the short story series Demons, Harlots and Crones, which follows two generations of the Demeere family and its legacy of spite and envy. Included in the series is Demon in High Socks; Holler it out with Lemonade; the Old Lady, Her Plymouth, and Cockroaches; Sex in a Pan; and the Fire Crone and Stone Harlot. Also within Monster’s pages are fifty-odd poems exploring the darker side of human nature and its undeniable conclusion. Two Orphan Sparrows, the Devil is a DJ, the Last Striptease, Beware of Librarians Promising Freedom and many more titles are found within. Ultimately monster asks the reader to look at the darkness found within herself and by facing it, perchance move beyond.

Wow, this is powerful stuff my friend...I cannot pick a favourite stanza out of this piece, every one cut, broke, and thrilled me in different ways...

Yes shards and sheaves fall
But I wish they’d stay alight forever
Then I would have taken forever
To say good-bye to you...this part did resonate deeply with me though, in ways that I cannot articulate...I'm still contemplating this one, reveling in its poignancy and plaintiveness...awesome work Pryde.

Thanks Steve. It was about capturing the feel of my greatest romantic heartbreak ... having had the love was exquisite, even if it was mostly one-sided, but it took forever for my heart to stop breaking before it could heal.

Oh yes, heartbreak...I suppose that's why I related to this one so much...the healing process tends to work at its own pace, which is rarely as rapid as we would like...

"Undead Detritus" man! i read that title and tried to prepare myself for what came next .. ( i love the fall) silly me! this poem is so horribly, delicately painful .. my thoughts go to my throat and choke me ... glutton for punishment here i go to the audio ... oh my! your poem numbs my senses Pryde .. man! how can leaves be so sharp!! :}}

I didn't have time to go to the audio, maybe this evening, but I truly enjoyed this poem. The repetition of the glass heart theme worked well for me, I like that in poetry. It is especially fitting today as leaves fall outside my window. Well done.

Your world must be a golden one then. I love that the fall here lasts as long as it does, but there is something quite splendid about fleeting golden days of an Albertan autumn. Thanks Noel ... make sure you get a walk in and report back with a verse or two:)

It is that in-between stage, outside my office on one side the leaves are still green, across the street from them, golden, as well as the ones that are behind me. Driving home there are green and gold bands in the urban forest in the southwest around Maple Ridge (the neighborhood, not the BC town!) Walking and poems thereof will have to wait until tomorrow when I go to the Running Room run club.
