Sonnet of an English Teacher

Sonnet of an English Teacher

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

The lament of my colleagues and me

"
An English teacher makes so many plans
Striving each day to share poems, books, words
To media and technology fans
Grunting, texting, monosyllabic herds
Stories of great importance go unknown
Unless a film is made to tell the tale
To read a novel, students are not prone
Since Spark Notes and internet will not fail
Written expression has taken a dive
Punctuation and spelling not enforced
Ensuring that the language stays alive
The Language Arts teacher's task to endorse
Communication, written or spoken
Leaves many English teachers heartbroken
