the mummy's heart still beats

the mummy's heart still beats

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the mummy's heart still beats

raw integrations

from ancient wounds

the stitches slowly un-thread

systematically dethroned

a king usurped of pride

his cuts lie open

to public scrutiny

they all shed plastic tears

for his loss

nothing is real anymore

and she becomes a non-entity

diffused into scattered memories

of feelings that once walked hand in hand

into a tomb of destiny...

“Diffused into scattered memories of feelings that once walked hand in hand into a tomb of destiny” ... we all must face this fate. Perhaps it is best to let destiny rest. A poem that touched my soul. truly, Pat

thank you for your insightful words, Pat.

This hits close to home... I'm not very good at granting access to my "tomb..." still haven't mastered reaching that deep and being that honest as a writer. It's just way too vulnerable of a feeling for me. Excellent piece as usual!

it's often hard to reach that deep, Travis...
thank you for your words,
j.
I love the way your words conjure up those old dusty inklings that are better off forgotten deep inside an unvisited tomb. But no, we can't leave it alone, can we? (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

so true, thank you, Margie.

All I could think of was the curse as the mummy's tomb was opened for scrutiny to reveal those cuts. Quick, close it again.

probably best to do that...thank you, Chris.

And what happens when the tomb is opened again, a puff of dust, the familiar lilt of the head, purse of the lips. It may be best to go with the curse rather than the blessing at that point. This was really cool. Dug it instantly.

thank you, sette,

In a lifetime of three score year and ten, the heart on average will beat almost 3 billion times; no matter how deep the cut, we should be ever grateful for its healing powers; though in the moment, we are often not.

I am curious about the second line. It throws me off.
It doesn't feel like it fits.
The rest flows.

exactly...
Your poem brought me an image that Im really intombed somewhere...that this me is not the real me and my heart in lying in the dark. I can hear it beat and is flooding my memories in love but they dont come all the way to the surface...dont follow through. Maybe its like that stellar line ...they all shed plastic tears...

thank you for sharing how you relate to this piece, Queenie...

The older we get the more stitches we receive from emotional wounds. And the more stitched we have the more likely some of them will reopen at some point.
