the lot of poets

 

 

 

respectful delinquents,

street-wise sympathetic sophisticates

 

university castoffs

unceremoniously expelled

from the intellectual community

because they have eloped without books

just figurative pages of love

 

and the interpreted geniuses

with stiff upper lips

and unimaginative ulterior motives

snooze on their hard desks

breathing into stale ink wells devoid of ecstasy 

 

the binding that binds them to blind reverence

as they aloofly expel the poets

as sinners

 

sterile facts for the chosen ones

metaphors for the fallen ones

the respectful delinquents

writing their wares upon pavement parchment

in chalky waves of diligence

 

how delighted they are to be kicked to the curb

of poetic insanity,

to find their own pools of periodic drowning

taking in muse filled swallows

that fly over gravestones of the forgotten bards

whose words still live

as

respectful delinquents

 

with the other street-wise sympathetic sophisticates

who dream in verse.

it use to be, not too long ago, that all poets came from academia. That is, until Sexton proved that
even drunken life was a call to humanity. (Crane thought that being called a poet was the same as being effete). Poetry was not considered the mannerisms of the manly but the screeching musings of the effeminate. But the 1960's gave a different voice to art and although Ginsberg, Lowell and Sexton were transgender, their voices embodied the souls of confession which was the savior of poetry going forward. I love this poem because it speaks to the human code of poetry writing. Poets are everywhere and they are everything non-scientific.

Wow! This speaks volumes. You are so talented for I see how you compare those aloof, righteous elites of Jesus' times and compare their outlook towards the talented and normal people as sinners of the word. Wow!
They think they are the only ones appointed by God if I may use that. How many great poets and writers were expelled, looked down on, redicueled and so forth in history, to find out their worth at later dates.

Prose people versus poets. Is that what they think, poets are castoffs expelled from the intellectual community? And sinners as well? Oh my, I ask myself whether I would want to move in their circles with attitudes like that. Great poetry Jacob. I've felt a bit like that in my time writing in rhyme, when free verse is the preferred style nowadays. Mind you I am spreading my wings a bit.You have some fabulous lines here.
