A poem about giving chase

Drive To Prison

Music is thumping, drink is flowing
having a great night out
See this girl staring at me
Checking me out no doubt

A couple of friends are getting in trouble
Doorman breaking up the fights
And once again we are kicked out of a club
Another end to one of my nights

Waiting outside the kebab shop
The girl walks past and winks
I have the audacity to ask for her number
At least see what she thinks

But as I leave to chase her
My friend grabs the neck of my shirt
“I hope your not ditching me mate
All for a piece of skirt”

I promised to drive him home
I shouldn’t have had so much to drink
But as the evening rolled on
I lost the ability to think

“Well we need to offer her a ride”
I said to my friend
His bloodshot eyes stare at me
His thinking starts to decend

We walk to my car, he trips on the floor
Pulls himself up by pulling on the door
We take our seats and start to give chase
To the girl that gave me a wink
I’ll offer her A nice ride home
I wonder what she’ll think

We see her walking alone
I speed up to get near
My mate grabs the wheel
“hey let me steer”
The girl turns in shock
As she hears screeching from the tyres
I try to pry my friends fingers
But they are attached like welded wires

An oncoming car has to swerve
to avoid our full beam light
The girl is hit by the oncoming car
And I witness the nightmarish sight

The body bounced off the ground
I could hear the CRACK
As several bones were broken
My friends arms finally slack

“we need to help that girl mate”
But all I could see were bars
Prison is where I would be heading
And I don’t see no other cars

So I drove away
the girl that winked is dead
My friend shot himself
from the images in his head

The other driver is in prison
For the murder that I caused
But there is no guilt on my mind
I barely even paused

Fantastically written. Whatever your subject matter was, be it drinking and driving or facing the consequences for one's actions, you've certainly made a good narrative poem. A nice read :)

Well-developed narrative and great pace... i like the unexpected ending that completes the characterisation in the poem, and the rhyme scheme that holds the story together is really good too.

No guilt nothing learned but still a great write and story told of foolishness and waste of life. Really I think the set up the descriptions and the true way some people feel expressed with no guilt in mind at all. Everyone suffered but him and one has to wonder why in a way it wasn't really his fault if one thinks about it his true crime was driving drunk but it was his friend who took the wheel. Good writing and story telling!!

So amazing. The way you described the scene and the interaction with the narrator and his friend.. ah, it seemed so real.
Kept me intrigued the entire time, on the edge waiting to see what would happen next. The twists of each passing scene were marvelous. I'm impressed.

Brilliantly gripping tale from start to finish.....and what a finish! Masterful story-telling.
