The Father

The Father

A Poem by Abhishek Asthana
"

Truly said, " Never is a man more of a man than when he is the father of a newborn. "

"

Could we put a name to a nostalgic role,

Naively by our heart and dispirited soul,,

Who propelled you out of social scuffles,

One who allowed you to discern purposeful goals,,

Who brought luscious candy after allegiance of the midnight,

Who did onerous labour to make your future bright,,

When you were forging ahead with your adolescence,

Your roguish deeds upset him nevertheless his eyes expressed delight,,

You kids are indestructible pillars while father portrays a fort.

Likewise years elapsed, that beloved oldie needs more of your support,,

Never ridicule his endeavours rather show reverence for sacrifice

As far as his ultimate wish, albeit he would ask for your comfort in heaven's court !!

Author's Note

Abhishek Asthana
Tried hard to depict a story of a father who sacrificed a lot for his children and now it's a turn of those kids who are supposed to be adaptable to understand the elderly character of their father.

you have absolutely described my father to a "T," Abhishek,
I could have written these exact words to him...and did write similar ones. He was a gem.
He is gone but I appreciate him more than ever, now.
thanks for this wonderful tribute to Fathers...they need to be thought of with a smile.

I loved your writing. Fathers play a powerful role in a child's life. Though most of the time, we miss understanding his importance in our lives, especially during our childhood as he is busy toiling hard for his wife and children at home. It is high time to make an appreciation for his efforts.

Agreed, this is an appropriate time to honour him and pay him a tribute.
Your all efforts into the poem can be seen very vividly..... Also according to the trend in India, we can say that girls are more closer to father and that is very correct! A father does every possible thing that he can just for the kids who are going to leave him after some point of time and still he does everything without giving a single thought to it. Sometimes it happens na when father is upset..just a tight hug from his child will take away all his worries...and trust me it is true in my case.. loves the way u showcased the love and sacrifices of father(papa)

You definitely describe all the ways some of us often wish we had experienced good fathering (I had a horrible violent child-rapist for a father). Your use of language is intelligent & your examples are solid, but I do not feel very much warmth or affection here. This makes a father seem like a robot only meant to work hard & do the right thing. There's nothing wrong with that, but I would also love to see the softer, more vulnerable side of being a father (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Strong portrayal of a father's sacrifice for the sake of his kids. Also, the ending lines imploring kids to respect and take care of their fathers in old age sums up the poem beautifully. Kudos to you!!

dear Abhishek... yes, many times Fathers sacrifice for their children. It is lovely when
grown children can care for their elderly parents. A well written poem with sentiments of respect and affection. truly, Pat

Thanks for your time and review... I am glad you liked the ending of the poem !
This poetry carries so much emotions. Each and every line depicting the unconditional love of father within a flow of rhyme has been nicely penned. It is indeed a great piece. Loved it.

I have a bit of a flinch response when I hear the word "father"... mine was somewhat abusive and I hold no malice I was a difficult kid and I know where it came from he was raised very strict and knew only what he knows from that slant... but my heart always weighs a bit heavy when I think of fatherhood. Now this portrait of fatherhood is a much nicer one to read and well penned in its expression
