Dead Society

Dead Society

A Poem by Lena Rossmore

They call it a democracy,
A theocracy,
Even aristocracy.
I call it Mediocracy
Because in this day and age
You dont control what you think and say.
Two plus two does not equal four.
Two plus two equals:
Beauty,
A slim body,
A nice weave,
Two plus two equals what the Media wants it to be.
So I say:
Let us not live in Mediocracy.
Let us live in individuality.
Let us live in originality.

In this world where Beyonce and Lady Gaga become the true standard of beauty
so when they wear a pair of shoes or a scarf with a skirt, everybody has to have it
just to be welcome in the 12 day club where style and the idea of self changes
(can change) after the second week begins to close. Where young black girls
complement each other for a nice weave instead of a nice disposition. Where
young men are comforted by large, shiny rims but cant walk safely to the corner
of their own block. Your so correct, let us not live in mediocracy and especially
not that thats defined by some other poor souls. Good work. hder.

Haha this is too true. We are only as free as the government wants us to be. This is a big theme in my saga!

This poem was the perfect read for me because I took a class on the perception of women in the media for my minor in Women and Gender Studies. And the standards of beauty that are perpetuated by American society are just f*****g ridiculous. Nobody can fit that mold unless they have the money to hire a trainer and a personal chef which the majority of us lack since we don't have those kinds of resources. While it is important to maintain a healthy diet and an exercise regimen to prevent health problems later in life, you shouldn't be starving yourself or getting expensive injections just to fit a narrowly defined perspective of what is beautiful.

This is wonderful because it is so -true-. It captures the thoughts I have on an almost daily basis in a much more eloquent manner. I love it.

Interesting piece and I totally agree with what you're saying in there. Important lines, therefore. And I'm impressed by your attitude because you're so young :-)

thank you very much! i try not to let my age restrain me from saying my thoughts :)
The flow in this poem was really good. I like the theme of this poem and it's point on the over-saturation of media. Good job keep it up.
