Dresden's Midnight Raven

Dresden's Midnight Raven

A Poem by Aethereal
"

This poem was written for The Raven Contest. The title says it all.

"
Dresden's Midnight Raven

'Once upon a midnight dreary, as I pondered weak and weary,'

I heard Allied bombers roar.
Through a silence that was eery,
there droned more than heretofore.
With eyes teary, sad, and bleary,
I fled to my basement floor
where a raven, dark and cheery,
hid within my haven's core.
I inquired, in ways leery,
Dresden's fate in this cruel war,
shall our Fuehrer fall, my deary?

'Quoth the raven, "Nevermore!" '

First of all, I am impressed with how long you kept up that rhyming scheme (and fit it all between two fo the most well known lines from the Raven to boot!) I often get annoyed at the lack of poetry on this site which seems to challenge itself, and openly scorns the idea of form, structure, and word play; so this was quite refreshing. Second, I love your rendition of the Raven here; I mean, those last two lines are hilarious!

I ditto that, we can but hope
The raven in the shelter as if saying
"join me you have nowhere to run"
or maybe the raven interfering
from your salvation to try to change your mind
thinking that the character in the poem was scared,
or maybe the raven trying to give you support.

Or the raven could be a metaphor of the subconcious spirit.

Applause, great poem scenario.

An amazing poem. One of those written in a more classic manner that as a beginner in writing poetry I find very interesting and very deep.
