The Price of your Immortality

The Price of your Immortality

A Poem by Allyson Wolfe

Zeus,

no more than a forgotten king,

power so great, it made my heart sing!

That was once and is no more,

you now hide under eagle's wing!

You no longer soar!

Your reign has been done,

your war was not won,

your life has ceased to exist!

You hide from the sun!

Your immortality disappeared in a mist!

Your wife, sweet Hera, forgoten too!

She's lost her touch,

she's hurting toO!

The stress she's had, staying here with you..

It's all too much.

She's given up.

What of your children?

They're gone now, too.

Fiery Apollo, with his eyes so blue.

His golden hair,

Those looks so fair!

And the beautiful Athena,

born of your mind,

now so hart to find!

Forgotten too!

Her eyes so gray,

so stormy,

like you.

And Artemis, pure!

But a distant memory, sure.

Your daughter, your favorite,

well she sure didn't make it!

She lost her eternity,

so longer secure!

Dionysus went mad,

immortality went bad.

His grapes were his drug,

oh this grave he has dug.

Nothing's eternal,

we'll all be forgotten!

The stories are gone,

immortality is rotten.

What will you become?

Your life is now over.

Cryptic old Zeus,

oh the life of a smoker.

HA! I love this! I know a lot of the old greek myths, several by heart. Persephone was one Zeus's daughter too and he promised his brother Hades to look the other way when Hades abducted her. THe Abdutction of Persephone is a tale of betrayal by an emotionally distant sky father. I learned all that crap in Psyche in school. I'm not posting that cause I think it belongs in your poem, your poem's perfect as it is. Great job!!

Greetings, my friend, from the host of the contest "Of Blood and Eternity".

This is a very intriguing poem. The Greek mythology you speak of is interesting, as always. I like how the narrator questions that old god, once a mighty tyrant king of his realm. Something, isn't, how all that was once thought permanent decays and crumbles into dust. True, nothing in the material world is eternal, but in the phenomenon of human experience and though, history repeats itself. Everything we know is based off of or compared to a precedent, something from the past that has not yet been forgotten. In that, everything we know or come to know is a tired cliche. For in the expanse of human existence, those things that one person deems "new" and "original" are what another calls "tired" and "trite".

Forgive my ramblings. This is an excellent piece.

Thank you for entering my contest.
