The Real Walter Fiction

The Real Walter Fiction

A Poem by Brad Nugent

so pretty Mr Mitty
with your salon-styled hair
lost in your own fair whimsy
what fantastic antics there

we tremble at such daring
such bravado makes us quake
your make-believe is total
so the real world must be fake

so witty Mr Mitty
oh this may come as a shock
but there are no secrets left
in your optimistic lot

the tender truth is acute
mostly hard but plain to see
but I do not have the skill
to be as genteel as thee

no pity Mr Mitty
no rite fantastique today
reality not softened
not delivered just for play

for your own good
you are disrobed
you are a fraud
you are unclothed
no Robin Hood
no Jackie Chan
no Jesse James
you're just a man

an anti-hero
stuck in life
like me
so

pocketa-pocketa that
my pretend sensitive friend
as you fairy tale away
in your ever after end

Author's Note

Brad Nugent
Walter Mitty is the steretypical anti-hero played by Danny Kaye in 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'. Always liked Danny Kaye - although reputedly a pain to work with! Some days I just feel like the anti-hero and long for that fantasy life to escape to. I guess we all do...

I really love that movie and i can't believe how well you have captured the sentiment of it! The flow of it has a whimsical and almost melodic feel and I can almost hear Danny Kaye's voice as I read it.

And the irony is that while you label yourself an antihero, your obvious skill as a writer and poet makes a lie of that statement.

I loved this story - used it to teach many classes! And Danny Kaye is always a favourite. This poem is a lovely tribute to him. As for the anti-hero, I think I've far more chance of acheiving that than of being a bona-fide hero any day! I loved that last stanza also. great poem - but then, all of yours are!

Hmmmmmmmm, this made me smile. Was it supposed to? The message here is uncertain to me. This person you speak of "Mr Mitty", is this your alter-go? Someone you wish not to be? I conclude the above because of the following:
an anti-hero
stuck in life
like me
so
