He Called Me By Name

He Called Me By Name

A Poem by Don Shaw
"

Sometimes when things seem to be falling apart, they actually fall into place.

"

                                     He Called Me By Name

                   My choices left me lonely,
                   and darkness was a friend.
                   Huddled in damp doorways,
                   seeking protection from the wind.
it was in a three week blackout,
                   I took my final drink.
                   upon an ice cold slab,
                   my pulse began to sink.

                   viewing from a corner,
                   I saw my body float.
                   In my ear He whispered,
and upon my soul He wrote.

                   He called me by name!
                   He called me by name!
                   He called me by name!
And freed me from my shame.

                   As He gave me purpose,
and told me what to do.
                   with in my lifeless nostrils,
                   His Holy Spirit blew.
I flew up from the table,
                   gasping for some air.
                   Meeting eyes with doctors,
                   with quite a ghostly stare.
                   First thing I noticed was,
                   the removal of my pain.
                   Then a conscious awareness,
that He had called me by my name!

                   He called me by name!
                   He called me by name!
He called me by name !
                   My life began to change!

Hi Don. A beautiful write and testimony of saving faith in the Lord that is moving. You paint a vivid picture of His call to you that was life changing. Flow and rhythm is melodic. Excellent use of repetition for emphasis of His love for you. A lovely song that I can relate to. Well penned. Write on!

A very interesting and 'haunting' piece of flowing poetry Don.

hahaha Thanks
This is a profound piece! I have read the review by James and I am so happy to hear you are pursuing the recording of it! It shall be a wonderful hymn and a tribute to revival and transformation of one who was lost and now found!
I am very touched by your words!!

Blessings,
Sheila

Ok. I am officially a fan. Why? Because I suppose I have desired for many years to write life to speak life. I usually find myself lamenting - complaining to God - I write with dark ink. But what you have done up here - that is what I aspire to do. that is using the gift for a purpose. this is a powerful piece

Dear Don

My third and final review of your pieces for today.

Again by my own standards I shall keep this brief.

My commentary:

1) You speak of illness here and how God healed and 'changed' you, calling you by name. I do so relate, you could not even begin to imagine Don with my own mental health disorder.

2) Your rhymes, rhythms and repetition again lend this piece like the other two I have read today a hymn like quality.

Suggestion. Were you able to find a songwriter, all of these pieces could easily be put to music.

3) The calling by name has a special meaning for me and to find it you need to look at 1 Samuel 3.

This is where Samuel was being called by God and mistakenly believed it was Eli.

Small extract - 1 Samuel 3:8

"A third time the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy."

I have been uplifted by reading and reviewing your three pieces today.

You therefore need to know that Christ is already working though your words by touching me.

God had given you a gift.

Go use it in his service.

Your friend

A profound piece, telling a somber story with a happy ending. Your poem portrays the joy of a transforming experience beautifully.

Interesting poem and idea to be called by your own name. It was the title that really drew me to read this. It was well written and easy to picture. The subject matter makes me uncomfortable, but that isn't your problem. Great poem! Great job!
