Morning on the Mountain

Morning on the Mountain

A Poem by Casey Truax

The dawn discovered me, hungry and hungover,
The fire still smoking in the blackened bricks.
I went down the quiet road
And the sun was hot upon my back.
The wilding bloomed among the glades
Of amaranth and clover and yellow trefoil,
Of chicory and carrot and swaths of morning glory,
Of dandelions, snapdragons, fragrant thistles
And wild violets tall as men.
A chocolate steed tossed his tail in a sunbeam,
And slugs wrapped 'round the drupelets of the berries.
The rooster crowed, the gnats whirled, the rabbits leapt,
The cats rolled on their backs
And geese flurried down the slopes.
I ate the berries from the boughs
And drank the water from the leaves:
The land was with life resplendent.

Kept telling myself, "It's more than a list, so much more than a list!" And it is! Brought to Spring and a scene from Peter Rabbit and even good old Winnie the Pooh, not to forget the all time legend - twitterpated cartoon. What leapt at me was the line about violets being "tall as men." For some reason Perhaps because that would be a sight to behold while "a chocolate steed tossed his tail in a sunbeam." Truly resplendent. Thanks for sharing. Frederick.

That is great to hear, thank you.

Amazingly lovely poem Casey. Your lilting words flow like rainbows of color throughout. I feel your imagery as though I were in the midst of all of it. Language, metaphor, alliteration, cadence perfect. It's your story and we see it through your eyes. Thank you for this.

The imagery.
Wow.
Reminds me of summers on a farm in a lake house growing up.

I was drawn to this because of its title. This poem connects me with nature. It makes me feel at one with myself. It has a peaceful feeling through out. Even though I’m an indoor person, it’s still a refreshing read. A wonderful piece of writing.

Your poem is the ultimate of show instead of tell . . . starting at the mundane level & working up into the full richness, being more & more aware of the vibrancy that abounds (((HUGS)))

A fine poetic recipe of all things pastoral: "A chocolate steed tossed his tail in a sunbeam,
And slugs wrapped 'round the drupelets of the berries" –– excellent ––))

This is a very lovely poem Casey. I really enjoyed the descriptive nature of this work. The images you paint in words conjures an eden in the mind of the reader. Very nicely done.
