Morning on the MountainA Poem by Casey TruaxThe dawn discovered me, hungry and hungover, The fire still smoking in the blackened bricks. I went down the quiet road And the sun was hot upon my back. The wilding bloomed among the glades Of amaranth and clover and yellow trefoil, Of chicory and carrot and swaths of morning glory, Of dandelions, snapdragons, fragrant thistles And wild violets tall as men. A chocolate steed tossed his tail in a sunbeam, And slugs wrapped 'round the drupelets of the berries. The rooster crowed, the gnats whirled, the rabbits leapt, The cats rolled on their backs And geese flurried down the slopes. I ate the berries from the boughs And drank the water from the leaves: The land was with life resplendent.
