You

You

A Poem by Anne’sRants

You, are so many things to me.
I can't count the meaning.
It is difficult to see;
but I see you when I'm dreaming

I remember cold nights
huddled in your arms;
war raging above us
as we talked of flying kites

Our ridiculous tea parties
where we drank with grim faces.
while you spoke in another accent;
pursed lips so we didn't let the laughter out

That time you showed up at our door
To give us love and happiness,
The kind we've known before
after a long day's work.

You treated it as no surprise
because, of course,
This is where you belong;
We knew it with a certain force.

A million others come to mind.
Dreams of dirt bikes and swing sets,
frog-catching, secret clubs and forts.
Hide-and-go-seek, friendship bracelets-
It all means so much to me.
It all means so much more.

Time goes on as you have,
and these old dreams fade.
Can we make new ones
in these timid summer days?

I will sit out on my porch tonight
and learn the wisdom of the stars.
Maybe they'll carry it back to you
I love you and that is all.
That is who you are.

a sweet and touching tribute

Posted 4 Years Ago

You just told a story of my youth. You took me back to the most wonderful days of my life. Me and my best friend, Larry. We grew up together as neighbors. We played in my playhouse that my Dad built. He was my first kiss at around age 10. We were mimicking our parents having tea and talking and trying not to laugh at each other. We had a secret hideout, a huge foxhole in the woods behind our house. I had a swing set and we would swing and sing together. We rode bikes together with half-blown balloons on the spokes to make a motor noise. We drove the neighborhood crazy. Larry made me a bracelet once, of braided gum wrappers. I wore it like it had diamonds. Then time took him away from me as he went off to California when he was twenty. He should have never gone. He never made it back. For a long long time, I pined for him, knowing it was in vain. The Heavens is always where I look to pray and imagine the ones I love that are gone are there looking back at me. I loved him and always will.

This is beautiful and brought back memories that have been cataloged a long time. It was nice to remember them again without falling apart. Such talent you have!

Glad i took you back. So many people miss this growing up.
The feel of this is yearning, regret and in the reminiscence of love once given lost but never dismissed. It is written in a sensitive voice with excellent description of those key memories. I could really see the protagonist sitting on the porch looking longingly at those stars.

Thanks john
I picked up on feelings of you missing a person here who was special to you. Someone you share many memories with. You love them and they are absent from you. I hope they come back into your life. Sadness here, a feeling of not being complete.

Hope it helps:)
a really nice tribute to a best friend who is no longer with the speaker...but the dream of that person...makes the friend still live in the imagination.
this reminds me of a best friend that i lost for awhile...but that person came back into my life in later years and we are closer than ever.
maybe the wisdom of the stars will bring this friend back to the speaker of the poem.
