A Huge and Birdless Silence

A Huge and Birdless Silence

A Poem by Cole Hayley

A Huge and Birdless Silence

Communication beggars, the homeless of elegancy --

Stripped bare of their own worn-feet but still walking empty

Planes of stalled talking-- swooping from one vowel sound

To the next buzz word; media-synced drones to retrofired

Blimps, filled to capacity with cartoonist who illustrate

Ugly-tales

I’m a beggar for unintentional heroism. A beggar for a media spinning

Pretty tales into month-long character studies. A media willing to

Write the altruistic complexes of superman. A media to plaster

Adhesive, smiling-stickers over their own bubbling, static shawls.

And most importantly, a beggar for a media that is truthful.

Lest, my empty ignorance tells beggars can’t be choosers

And choosers are a dying breed.

Wonderful ... wonderful ... wonderful ... even in a storm the heart moves to capture the melody of the flute. A target of the public media which ought to serve the society ... capture its moods on its pages and in that fulfill its service. But of all these things in the poem the one word that'll stay with me the next few days is ... huge. Pat on the back Cole.

to be a chooser is to accept your dying and your time is short and no one wants to admit that now

I know it says something about the media and honesty, but I'm just enamored with that title.

"beggars can’t be choosers

And choosers are a dying breed."

I loved this piece! It is rare that I fully grasp the (intended) meaning of your work, but this I completely understood instantly. Of course, that is not to say that I don't appreciate the challenge I'm faced with when reading your more avant-garde, techno-spacey-vibed poetry, which I adore also. No criticism today, only love.

I gather that this is a plight of conflictions, with a kind of cynicism towards the drained recourses of mainstream media pursuits, yet this is subtle, unique and your chosen angle and choice of words are nicely nuanced, provocative and mind engaging, as a critique, very fine indeed and a refreshing read.

I enjoyed the read and word play throughout the poem. I'm still stuck on the thought that we could ever find 'a media that is truthful' - is there such a thing anymore? It would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath waiting.
