Long after...

Lifetime memories made ( please read, if only for the back story.)

Long after the slow walk down the aisle,
long after their vows exchanged,
long after confetti, popping corks
and photos, just so arranged.

Long after the feasting, speeches and tears,
long after their very first dance,
long after the party, meticulously planned
with nothing at all left to chance.

Each one that attended will never forget,
with smiles will ever recall,
the marriage of Nick to the beautiful Grace
in the grounds of old Fawsley Hall.


Back story:
Grace is the daughter of two of our closest friends and attended our wedding as a soon to be born baby ( 25 years ago). Aged 14 she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Whilst undergoing treatment for this, Grace informed her mum that if she survived she would train to be a nurse, so that she too could help folk in their hour of need. True to her word, after leaving school Grace studied nursing, eventually training and passing all exams and then further studying so as to be able to administer the life saving care she herself had received.
At present Grace is working as a community nurse.
A truly beautiful, inspirational young lady.

Graces' mum and dad were the only two at our wedding as we wed in secret... long story. Grace was born 2 weeks after that day, so in reality she attended our wedding as we did hers. She is very much like a daughter to me, very precious.

This is an awesome & inspiring story! I love your poem, but I also wonder if you must've felt it an insurmountable task to write something as a tribute to such an amazing human being! We need stories like this. Our world has so many sad stories . . . we crave such joy in achievement as this! Hi Margie, thanks.
Having known Graces' parents for over 40 years, and Grace all of her life, I felt no pressure as I would fully expect them to be brutally honest and tell me if they thought it to be in anyway not to their liking. I actually pondered writing this for a couple of days, and finally rattled it off yesterday when I came in from work. I then pinged it to Graces' dad and at the same time my wife, thankfully they both enjoyed the read.
Both Grace, and her now husband Nick, have since been shown the poem and are delighted with it...phew. They are, as I write this, en route to Dubai for a minimoon :))

A beautiful piece for a truly special person Gee. Having done voluntary work before in a childrens hospice, it is no surprise to me there are so many selfless, beautful souls in the world, that in their hour of need, they worry for others and put others before themselves.
We do sometimes forget how truly lucky we are, both in a "there but for the grace, go I" and in knowing people like this.
