A Poem by Gee
"

Life's routines

"
Beneath a muted harbinger text enters stage left,
slides silently east before exiting stage right,
disappearing behind a blooming, arrow headed white hosta
that reaches out for the diluted early morning light
filtering through half open, white, wooden shutters,
these the latest "must have" window accessory.

Nearby a pendulum rocks restlessly beneath a black, number less face
upon which two slow moving, siver, mismatched limbs
point to that which is known, but not shown,
time told inwardly, unconsciously, by their ever changing angles,
nought to three sixty, an endless cycle,
round and round and round and round,
this mirroring the oft' hum drum nature of life and living.

A cold, coffee stained bone china cup, thrice filled and drained,
sits atop tomorrow's recycling, yesterday's news.
Next to this lays a remote that never is so,
it's coloured buttons faded, worn, by the constant fingering of bored digits
in an early morning quest for... for...
for something other than the same ol' same ol',
though this as fruitful as the search for the pot of gold at rainbows end.

Above, upstairs, a creaking floor rouses the two sleeping dogs that bookend me,
their soft, warm, bodies snug against my thighs.
They drop lazily to the floor, stretch, yawn,
then trot slowly over to greet " mum" as she enters the room,
their happy tails beating an excited welcome off any furniture passed.

" Morning honey, coffee? "
And so another day begins

Author's Note

Gee
Written whilst looking at a wall( I'm in a holiday cottage in Norfolk) that has a clock to the left, flat screen telly centre then to the right on a lower level shelf sits a hosta( I think) that part covers the bottom right hand corner of the telly( as I look at it)
A double full height window sits to the right of the hosta, floor to ceiling white shutters fixed across these.

I'm a sucker for really good actors.... stage and screen.

Five or six or four years ago Anthony Hopkins and Ian MacLennan did a "special movie" (it was a stage play without an audience) together, that is probably one of their last, called "The Dresser". It is, technically, a movie but... it's not really a movie. I think you should watch it. I don't think it would be productive if I told why specifically.

You're getting a WOW for this one Gee..... WOW. (Told ya)
Considering this is about the passing of time and how we all deal with it, some better than others, it isn't that surprising that you managed to dissect it so accurately, in a way we can all recognise part of self within.
Really surprised there was no mention of throwing scrunched up paper into a basket.... I always had you marked as a scruncher (Did you think I was gonna say tosser there? Never! 😀
The attention to detail in this moment is amazing Gee, from the faded remote and the intrusive hosta, to the beat of the clock, moving you ever forward at a snails pace.... I was there man!
Love it.

You've painted a nice picture here with some beautifully presented imagery. Felt like i was there.
Isn't it just marvelous how we have the ability sometimes to just sit back, look and stare at a wall and it gives enough inspiration to write a nice piece. Loved it! Thank you

Thank you kindly Troy
This is better than photos, Gee... wonderfully memorable, every word a moment of your temporary home. Great lines, phrases, so many but visible.. won't be too many cos of other readers must find their own..

arrow headed white hosta,

for something other than the same ol' same ol',

Wonder how it will be when you get back home and almost at once, maybe, find something isn't where it should be: Now then.. where's that hosta gone?!'

Read lots of your words but think this might be in the top five..

CHUFFED you like this EmmaJ, was wondering as to how it would be received :))
Many thank yous
great read for me sir! love it! so very relatable I was reading about my self ... how we love those dogs eh!? this line is such a fine chuckle for me: "a remote, that is never so, lays nearby," ...gotta love it says i! as i think about it ... the nice thing about routines, aside from the comfort and enjoyment they bring, if one mixes them up just a little .... it can be high adventure ;))))))))))))))))
