'til once more the songbirds sing

'til once more the songbirds sing

A Poem by Gee
"

The onset of winter

"
Winter came not meek nor mild
but with hoare frosted, bellowed breath
that coated all with thin laid ice
sending autumn to her death.

Whilst a waning sun, by summer spent,
rises barely roof ridge high
as armadas of grey galleons
sail 'cross an ever darkening sky.

And fallow fields neath purest white
trees petrified and bare,
are an epitaph to a season lost
and the beauty she did share.

I inward say, " farewell for now,
farewell 'til the birth of spring,
let me slumber deep, silently,
'til once more the songbirds sing"

Nicely written. And I, for one, am more than ready for Spring. I've been in hibernation long enough. I'm like the old bear wanting to get out and see the other side of the mountain. Bless, F.

Me too.
Thanks Fabian
This resonates of sadness to me, and reminds me of something Keats would have penned.

' Winter came not meek nor mild .. but with hoare frosted, bellowed breath .. that coated all with thin laid ice .. sending autumn to her death.'

Such a chilly start but amazing meter, Gee. Plus the same in the second and third stanzas, Your phrasing and the canvases you've created are quite something, sir. THEN ... there's the final stanza, beautiful yet = touching on tragic, an emptiness highlighted til that final phrase., '... til once more the songbirds sing"' choked me up for a few seconds, Reminded me of the empty skies and lack of sounds.. seem to have been going on for so long, too long. Imagine we're all needing earlier days, shorter nights and floods of light.

Very very nicely done
Almost, note I say almost, makes suffering through winter worthwhile

Yes, winter has few charms when compared to the beautiful autumn. That may be why some animals hibernate. They know they're not missing anything.

Hmmm, might come back as a hedgehog.
Thanks for dropping in
This is such a beautifully bittersweet song for spring... for the songs of the birds to rise again as the blossoms do... Winter seems hardest on my soul... perhaps it is because the birds are so often silent... and maybe that's why I keep the birdfeeders full. :)

Thank you:)
The rhythm you create in this is really enchanting, and the imagery paints a beautiful picture. I love the first stanza especially, it's an excellent entry point to the world of this poem.
