~ A pOet Walked In ~

~ A pOet Walked In ~

A Poem by J. Hampton
"

A piece inspired by all the incredible pOets I have known...a conglomeration of fascinating things about each and his spirit and craft....when i dropped this they "ALL" thought I wrote it "them"

"

A pOet walked in……through the blues and the smoke

smiled jazz with his face

and the twist of a joke.

A voice …all his own….not the regular kind.

sipped wine from my soul

poured the ressst… down my spine.

Bass kicked in as He started to speak

Angels danced off his grin

kinda makin’ me……..weak

Kicked the light off the edge, of the Man -In-The- Moon

brought the truth to its’ knees….not a minute too soon.

blowin’ holes in the cheese…..like my mind.

He was ….FINE

DOUBLE-TIME

Droppin’ words never heard….like a prophet sublime.

power …all tangled up in his hair

whispered History ….did he miss me ????

blind…. by the length of my stare ?

Caught up like a fool ….who forgot to undress.

but jumped in the pool …anyway.

too late I jumped in….and forgot how to swim.

lost in that voice with no choice…I WAS ..,in.

Teased like a stray breeze ….tracing places to moments unroamed.

words slipped from his lips.

like a candle……slow burns

dancing right down to the bone

Made me feel “twilight –crazy” …..all  anointed …and hazy

He gave all he was….in a million parts

sifting through the screen of time.

made me… long

 to ..belong…..

to him….

for a time.

All alone in his …..in his zone.

in his vibe.

schmoozing blues….till he sat by my side.

As close….became closer

He drew into me.

as we smoldered….and chatted

sipping….” Sax-A–Phrase  tea.

knee-to-Knee ….soul to soul

as the candles grew dim

So it was on the night a pOet walked in.

there's this one guy i know with the voice of a tree - blows me away everytime he reads ... only problem is i get so stuck on his voice i rarely hear his words ... oops ...

i especially like these lines:

Smiled jazz with his face

Lost in that voice with no choice..mind....spinnin sin

i started this piece one time about how cologne should be illegal around me - there's some scent some men wear that drives me crazy and i've never gotten an answer about what it is exactly - this poem makes me want to finish that one ...

once again - nice write ... it's tight ... peace, marie

I actually printed this one and hang on a wall of my office. I do this for daily inspiration and never did it before with any poem. Hope this is accurate description of how much I like it.
I reccomend a song to listen while reading (apologises for it's not jazz) Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Nothin'

I loved every bit of this... I felt like I was sitting in a small cafe listening to this being read on stage. To be honest, I've never sat in a small cafe listening to anything being read, but now I would love to! The flow, the language, the imagery... I loved it all. This all blended to create an atmosphere of sensual creativity. Reading this was an experience.

sipped wine from my soul
poured the ressst down my spine.

What more do I need to say about this? Simply superb...

Angels danced off his grin

I love, love, love it! You have a style all your own and it works well. Keep 'em coming and thanks so much for sharing!

You kept the jazz feel coming through your words and I found myself reading it that way. Your approach and form and clever words make this the fantastic poem it is. A prize poem!

I knew it was a familiar place, but I was just as glad to visit that smokey room again. Love it.

Aw, this sneaked up on me and surrounded me with the sound of your voice. I know that must have been your sultry, teasing voice I heard. It just swims through a sultry sea. Stunning and sensual. How have I never found this? I really thought I had been through your works with a fine tooth comb.

I Loved this piece! If they were looking and not posting it was because they didn't understand. Kennoth Rexroth brought music to underground poetry. If you wanted to see the power and seductiveness of the spoken word, you had to sit there in the smoke and listen to the words drift about the room, with a snare drum, bass or sax making the words float. You have captured the feel of St Michael's Den, a place I knew where men wondered in to speak on stage. There was a beauty to hearing the voice speak the written word. It could be over powering. Beautiful piece. Rain..

Excellent. Fun. Not your usual run-of-the-mill work either.

Much appreciated!

This poetic ode to poetic souls was smooth as glass, potent as grain alcohol, cool as the other side of the pillow. Perhaps I'll grow up to be equivalent to the pOet you've envisioned and breathed life into with your sly, polised prose. Nah, that probably ain't happening. But perhaps with the help of cognac flowing, cigar end glowing, Miles Davis and Coletrane blowing, I can see myself that way anyway in my moments of purest vanity. :-)
