The system

The system

A Poem by Firemay
"

This is a poem I wrote because school annoyed me.

"

We open up our minds

We listen and discover

We pick ourselves up

And then slowly recover

We smile and continue

The system then takes charge

And so we are lost again

Trying fast to recharge

They say that only like this

We will be able to succeed

But does that have to mean

That first we ought to bleed?

I want to open up horizons

Not wait for my defeat

To inspire and to wonder

Not reluctant to compete

On a simple piece of paper

For a single grade or test

To puke all of my knowledge

Is it really for the best?

We are supposed to love this

The place that lets us grow

But instead, we dread it

Its existence keeps us low

It shuts down our minds

No longer able do dream

The system makes us weak

It makes us want to scream

But we carry on with it

Not making any change

We go on with the dread

Isn’t it all too strange?

“Send your kids to school”

The teachers shout and explain

“They will grow and succeed”

Don’t they know it only gives us pain?

Powerful and worthwhile words and thoughts shared.
"It shuts down our minds
No longer able do dream
The system makes us weak
It makes us want to scream"
The above line is true in many countries and places. Brain washing. I believe we must know our world. Make the proper decisions. Don't allow naysayers to blind you. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry. I enjoyed this one.

I like it :)

But does that have to mean
That first we ought to bleed? - you could change ought to 'have', the tempo is smoother.

I can understand your resentment at having to learn "unnecessary" topics. I had the same problem and left school with no formal qualifications. When I left, I "discovered" that I had a basic knowledge of so many things that I eventually went into a scientific career. Without the " superfluous" knowledge there was no sense of direction.
Your poem may be like " opening a can of worms" but aerating the garden of your mind makes it more fertile. It made me reflect back on my youth.
Lecture over.... I enjoyed your style ....and sentiments in this piece.

Thank you ! for the lecture aswell
The school system could be a lot different. Imagine going to school for something you were good at and loved, like you can do with college/university, but with grade 1-12 and they pushed you towards that something, only taught you things relative to that particular paths and obviously social skills. This poem got me thinking like crazy, thanks for that! Thanks for sharing.
