When I Was Your Lover

When I Was Your Lover

A Chapter by My Fair Lady
"

One Wife's Thoughts

"

Somewhere in the back of my mind
I must have known that saying
yes to you would change everything.

I must have known that I would allow
myself to settle again
into the routine of life.
I would leave behind
the lover that I had become
to be your wife.

As your lover, I felt beautiful
and appreciated.
You had to work for my affection
and I gave it freely.
I saw the best of you
and you the best of me.

As your lover, our time was precious
and we filled it
with beautiful togetherness.
I never fell asleep on the couch
while you watched tv.

I didn't "nag" you about unfinished projects.

You were interested in me then.

As your lover, you would plan things
for me, special suprises
trying to win my heart.
Now you make excuses for your
laziness, because I am already yours.

We didn't have to talk about money

or kids

or the bills

because that didn't matter, and

every second counted.

As you lover, you loved me with all your might
the night was filled with passion
and we didn't care if we slept.
In your arms I could escape the
stress of my everyday life
as you took me to the places
I needed to go
to feel
for one moment
sexy, and stunning.

Had I thought things through
I would have remained your
lover
At least then,
I would not feel obligated
to pick up your socks.

I am of the idea that for many, marriage just absolutely kills the Lover. All that daily B.S. of life. Ugh. I don't ever want to be married again for exactly the reason that your poem illustrates. It ends up that way for so many.

Excellent write, as usual

I've seen this so many times it has seriously displaced any thoughts on my part of ever commiting through vows or legally~ and this still happens even in unmarried relationships~ your poem is a realistic and beautifully composed tale of relationships descending through everydays of familiarity where perceptions shift on the part of one or another~ I know this tale very well~

I so understand this poem, relationships are hard and draining, and at some points very dry.

I live your poem...it is how life tends to flow once your married, at least for most of the people that I know. I feel the questionong and yearning to a changed life. I enjoyed reading your poem, its an honest piece of heart!

One thing that terrifies me about getting married again is this, you are no longer the cherished lover, but house- keeper, how does it get that way??
You have written a very emotional piece, one I hope is not true! It is sad when a relationship is taken for granted and all changes, and yet we yearn for the lover.

this is good. i really love it. it's so deep and true. speaking from the heat i guess? i can tell you i see the same. my fiance and i just aren't married yet. i hope it doesn't change anything, but i know it will. marriage always changes things. why ruin it, ya know? if you could stay with the one you love forever and not get married, wouldn't that just be great?
