Chapter TwoA Chapter by Joey IrwinDaryl is back at Four Stone Manor to try and understand what happened to him the previous night. Greeted by some new friends Daryl of overwhelmed by his predicament. Can he cope?‘Who am I?
What have I done? Why do I feel so alive?’ I kept asking these questions over
and over again. I couldn’t understand why I became so angry when normally I
would just let the things Chris did fly over my head. And why did it feel so
good? was a question I could never answer. I suppose the fact I stood up to him
could be one reason. I kept running
and running until I reached the gates of Four Stone Manor, it looked so different
during the day that I was confused and thought I had the wrong house. The dead
trees stand tall guarding the gravel path and the shutters on the windows
swayed and squeaked in the wind, banging occasionally against the window
frames. This time I wasn’t scared, not by the house anyway, instead I ran up to
the door and made sure it was closed when I was on the other side. I remembered
it well, I remember the decor, the cobwebs and my way to the nursery, but
that’s not where I was going. I needed to look around some more, and hopefully
find whoever attacked me last night, in my head this didn’t sound so stupid but
I kept thinking. ‘If they
wanted to kill me, they would’ve done it last night’. I had to find them. I had
to know what was happening to me. As I was walking through the narrow corridors
the floorboards were creaking, mice were scurrying about and the wind was
howling down the chimneys. There were broken mirror pieces scattered all over
the floor. I couldn’t help but pick up a piece and check out my neck, the scars
where gone, I looked at my eyebrow too and the cut was gone. How can they heal
so quickly? It was getting stranger and stranger. I continued walking through
the corridors, checking the doors, most were locked and the ones that were open
were empty. I was beginning to think that it was all my imagination, that I was
still dreaming. I guess the realisation of actually punching the school bully
in the face was just too much to handle. I was tired,
weak and ready to give up when rapidly my body began to freeze up again, my
hands were stuck to my side and I couldn’t open my mouth to scream. I could
feel a presence lingering behind me. An icy presence who’s breath was cold on
the back of my neck. I wanted to turn around but I couldn’t, the fear of
whoever was behind me was sinking in slowly. I could feel a tight grip around
my neck, so tight that I could hardly breath. And then I was out, I crashed to
the floor and closed my eyes. I woke up
feeling weak, nauseous and extremely hungry. I didn’t know what time it was or
where in the house I was. I stood up and went towards the small window and
wiped away some of the dirt and peered out over a forgotten garden. It was dark
and raining heavily, raindrops were dripping through the roof and into an old
saucepan on the floor. My head was spinning and I stumbled towards a mirror
leaning against the wall, I was semi-naked. The only thing I had one were my
boxer shorts. My whole body was growing paler and paler and a small hint of
blue was appearing. My spots had disappeared and my muscles were beginning to
become more defined. I couldn’t help but admire myself for a brief second
before I noticed something. I had very small fangs in my mouth, so small that
they looked like normal teeth, but they weren’t my teeth. I slumped down
in a corner of the room staring at my arms and hands. I kept thinking the same
thing over and over again. ‘What’s
happening to me?’ Suddenly the door swung open and stood in the doorway was a
hooded figure, the same one that attacked me. It glided over to me and held out
its hand. Long nails painted red protruded from its long fingers. I held it’s
hand until it helped me up. The hooded figure then glided towards the door,
stared at me and glided back down the corridor leaving the door open along with
the smell of sweet perfume. I had to follow, I ran to the door and down the
corridor, following the smell of perfume until I’d caught up with the figure. I
wanted to talk to it but I couldn’t. We come to a halt in front of some huge,
red double doors. They too, like the rest of the house, were worn and filthy. ‘You must stay
here until we call for you’ Said a warm but sexy female voice from under the
hood. She then walked right through the door like a ghost. As if my mind wasn’t
confused enough the thoughts of ghosts were coming through thick and fast. I
waited outside the door, the wind was swirling inside the house round my bare
feet and legs, I was cold and wondering if she was ever coming back, or ever
going to call for me. I placed my hand and ear to the door to try and listen
in, that’s when she appeared in a cloud of black smoke behind me. I nearly
jumped out of my skin she scared me so much, I couldn’t understand how she did
it. She held out her hand and held mine. Facing the door her warm voice was too
much to resist. ‘We’re ready
for you now’ She dragged me further and further towards the door, she went
through and I tried to resist. After all, I have never gone through a door
before. Her force was stronger and I was pulled right through the solid wooden
door unharmed. I found myself
in a room with a roaring fire and a huge round table covered in food. Around
the table were three more hooded figures. I’d never felt so under dressed in
just my boxers as the robes they were wearing had beautiful dark silk patterns
on them. They all sat at the table and slowly put down their hoods. There was an
old man with long silver hair flowing down one side of his face and another
much younger man with straight long black hair with red streaks running through
it, he was well built and smiling at me. A woman sat facing directly at me had
long platinum blonde hair, and finally the woman which brought me here
let down her hood and revealed long locks of bright red hair and bright
luscious red lips. She walked over and placed a white robe with a black silk
pattern over my body. ‘There you go,
don’t want you feeling under dressed’ she said softly as the others chuckled at
her joke. ‘Sit down boy’
the old man ordered in a nice manner. ‘I see you
found your way back to us, this is highly peculiar’ I didn’t know what to say,
his bright red eyes were fixated upon me as he spoke. ‘Well I think
we’d better introduce you, I’m Arcturus, leader of this group. This is my
daughter Eve. This is Felix and you’ve already met Tamsin’. I was puzzled,
these are the people who attacked me and yet they’ve invited me for dinner,
given me a robe and introduced me. ‘What’s your
name then?’ Asked Felix politely across the table. I stuttered, this wasn’t
normal. ‘Spit it out
boy’ I could tell instantly that Eve was the rude one of the group, she looked
and sounded like it. ‘Err...Daryl,
Daryl Poskit’ I could feel the glare of Eve burning me like a laser however it
was somewhat mellowed by the friendly glare of the others. I’d never felt
so confused, who were these people? I sat at the table awkwardly and tried to
work out what was happening, why where they being so friendly. I had to speak
up. ‘What do you
want with me?’ I said quickly, not thinking really about what I said. Everyone
stared at me before Arcturus spoke up. ‘What do you
mean? You’re one of us now’ ‘One of us?
What do you mean by that?’ I replied quickly. ‘Well, you
entered our domain last night and well...we bit you, you’re becoming one of us’
Piped up Tamsin. ‘Becoming one
of you?’ It was sort of making sense. Felix must’ve seen the confusion in my
face and made an effort to help me understand. ‘We’re
vampires Daryl, you came into our house last night and we...well I bit you, you
are slowly becoming a vampire’. The news ravaged through me however Felix’s
voice was strangely warming, making it sound like it wasn’t such a bad thing
being bitten by a vampire. I started to shake, my life was going to change
forever and there’s nothing I can do about it. ‘This doesn’t
explain why you’re being nice to me, why didn’t you kill me?’ ‘They’re worse
things out there, even for one of us. We couldn’t kill you, we can’t. We can
only change you. Because you came back we have to take you in as part of our
family, it’s the same as what happened to Felix.’ For some
reason this all felt comforting, for once people stronger than me we being nice
to me and treating me like a human, well, what’s left human in me. ‘Excuse me’ I
said as I ran towards the door and through it, forgetting I could do that. I
kept running higher in the house until I reach the attic. The wind and rain
were still battering the house outside. I sat in the window and stared out. The
only thing I could do now was cry. © 2011 Joey IrwinFeatured Review
