My demons

My demons

A Poem by Justin Street

Throwing your rum
Against an X’s wall
Shows what I’ve become
As I pass out in my hall

Shedding alcohol tears
Is quite a sign
Losing my life is a fear
I’m falling behind

My kids are asleep
I love them with my all
Though they silently weep
At their father’s fall

But I don’t want to stop
You know this alcoholism
Is my final drop
To what is one hell of an exorcism

So my demons are gone
But the memory does maul
Tonight I sleep on the lawn
With my stars I stall

WOW. my father was an alcoholic. he died in a motorcycle accident. I still blame him for leaving us but at the same time this poem kinda helps me see how hard it is to be that person. Knowing youre hurting the people you love but not wanting to stop...thank you.

I like how you did the father's point of view here instead of his kids/ wife. This kinda gives us the point of view of a drunk, and I think that's hard to write. Very cool poem, very original. :)

Alcohol can cause many problems. I know the dangers of it thats why I never drink it. This poem describes how alcohol can really turn your life upside down. It might make the reader feel guilt if they are a alcoholic themself and fear to a person who wants to start drinking

Alcoholism is something so many people can relate to. I have a couple of alkies in my family, and it has caused some problems. I like the phrase "shedding alcohol tears."

Talks to me about the heart break of an alcoholic and this inability to stop. It's heart breaking really.

A very powerful meaning behind this, I'm sure.
The crying of the alcohol tears is a very powerful image indeed. You certainly do have a talent for this, without a doubt.
Unfortunately you do get some people who take everything in a write literally.. Assuming the persona is whomever wrote the piece. I see from the author's note that this is not the case for this poem. Which, from one point of view, is very good to be honest.
A great piece you have here, keep it up (:
