A Monster With a Familiar Name

A Monster With a Familiar Name

A Poem by Ashley Blair

What angels are born of tragedies?
And what monsters are born when they realize
They're not out of the darkness yet?
Venom is cried out of swollen eyes
And the monster asks if that is the broken creature's last defense
In a rage he smears her inky black tears in the crevices of
Her translucent skin
Pretending that he cannot see her bleeding heart
That she cannot see his
He poisons her blood stream with her own pain
Thinking that it was intended for him
Instead her soul like an ephemeral moth
Is caught in the world's flame
