Sadness Is Just Another One Night Stand

Sadness Is Just Another One Night Stand

A Poem by Ashley Blair

My sadness
Oh, it is a vicious lover
It lays me down
Every night
Stripping away
Every piece of my soul
Until my bones are left
Exposed on
This
Broken bed made
Of cockroaches

It caresses me
Pressing into my skin
Breathing down my neck
Until I let it in

I didn't know
It was a sadist
Loving to bruise my body
As it molds me
Into what it wants me to be
I didn't know
That it wasn't my lips
It wanted to kiss
It wanted to own all of the
Places that hide
From the light
It wanted to spread like a disease
In all of the places
Only I can see
Desecrated
Sacred places
That are easy to hide
Underneath
Long sleeves

It promised me a bouquet
And a tag
To go with it
But instead of reading
Anonymous
Admirer
It would say
Beloved
Daughter and
Friend
They'll be beautiful
It says
Just sign across your
Wrist
Where the red x
Meets your arteries
And you'll have
All of the roses
You could ever
Dream of
Never
Seeing

But it is on nights
Like these
When it goes to sleep
Wrapping itself
Like a blanket that's
Too heavy
Around me
I realize
This melancholy
Doesn't desire to stay
By my side for
Life
To love, to have children,
To grow old
To die

It's here for the sex
And it will be gone
By the morning light

Author's Note

Ashley Blair
It's meant to be dark, yet, hopeful. It's like this: depression, this sadness, is like a casual hook up. Consensual, barely. It's a one night stand and the bitterness of a cigarette in your mouth afterwards to cover up the taste. You fall asleep with it. But it's gone by the morning. It doesn't mean that you only feel sadness at night, and that the morning sun kills the pain. It means that the light always overcomes the darkness.
