Late Night Thoughts

Sometimes I lay awake at night

and ponder what could have been.

If things had ended up just right,

the things that should have been.

My brain loops certain points in time

I wish I could revise.

If regretting was a crime,

it would lead to my demise.

The darkness is consuming

as the moon brightly gleams.

Sleep itself is looming

as these thoughts turn into dreams.

We all have these kinds of thoughts, and sometimes they turn into nightmares. BUT the twist of them turning into "dreams" is soothing. It's like an indication of coping with the trials of life. If you don't mind my saying, the musicality could use a bit of tweaking, but the overall outcome of this poem is simply brilliant! Well done!

Regrets are an unfortunate part of life we will have to encounter at some point in our lives. I have my own and I'm aware they can be sad to possess. You wrote this beautifully.

Ah...I think everyone has these kinds of thoughts. I know I do when I lie awake at night when my thoughts are racing. I like the rhyme in this one. 'If regretting was a crime...' Great line.

If you had taken that road-not-taken, then you wouldn't be on the road that you're on now. All roads lead to enlightenment. One should have no regrets if one is happy where one happens to be at the present time. I've broken up with people in the past, people who are now living beautiful lives, and I'm happy for them, and the freedom those break-ups gave me led me on to a better path in life. We all benefited. Your poem got me thinking about such things.

it's true, we do pave our own path, however sometimes we fall back into the "what if land," even though we try not to. It's natural. I think this poem can be understood universally, because no one is perfectly happy about all the actions they took, or didn't take in the past.
