They Told Me

They told me I could be anything I wanted to be

They told me not to limit myself, to be free. 

To not let boundaries hold me still.

To not let walls block my freewill.

This was my plan, but then they told me

that I wouldn’t be anything without a college degree.

So I took out some loans, and went to study 

because after postsecondary, I would be free.

This was my plan, but then they told me

I’d need a good job to become debt free. 

So I worked day and night to make money

to repay the loans that would help make me free.

This was my plan, but then they told me

I wouldn’t be taken seriously if I didn’t Marry

so I spent my time dating to find my heart’s “key”

When I should have just been focussing on me.

They once told me I could be anything I wanted to be.

They told me I didn’t have to limit myself to be free.

Except that’s exactly what I did.

They set a trap, and I blindly slid. 

I was never free.

Not really.

This rings sooooo much truth! Though a guy, thus couldn't relate to every line, I could def relate to the most part of it, and when that ending came, I had to take a breath, for that's exactly how I feel too. Stanza 2 Line 4, you don't necessarily need the "then" (it rather mars the musicality). But overall, wow! This is something! Well done!
