The Kiss That Greeted Me

The Kiss That Greeted Me

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

The Kiss that Greeted Me

Yours was the kiss

that greeted me

that welcomed me home

at the end of the day,

that warmed my heart

like a Hemingway novel.

Author's Note

Kelly Scheppers
I'm coming up on the time of year that I feel most melancholy about...the anniversaries of the passing of both my parents and older sister. October, November and December.

The sepia tones of this Mecuro B. Cotto artwork simply captivated me, and somehow breathed life into my words. May it remind you of someone that greeted you with a kiss!

Both my parents passed in the fall...my mom died in November, nearly twelve years ago, and October will greet me with the one year anniversary of my father's passing, so your words speak to me...both my parents were huggers and kissers, as is all my family, and we were always greeted with those precious gestures of love no matter how long we were gone throughout the day...the last time i saw each of my parents, our time together ended with a hug and kiss...so thank you, for sharing this wonderful piece with us...you have captured a universal sentiment in such few words and the picture - as usual - garners strong emotions...it is good to remember...be well, my friend :D

yes, Kelly, no matter how old we are when we lose our parents...you are kindly welcome, my friend
sorrow has taken an accepted place ... a small gently lit room with a glow about it .. it doesn't rudely press itself into my consciousness any more .. and if i go there on purpose the lingering tears are mixed in sublime synergy with joy ... neither one dominates ;) i am at an age in which i have lost my wife and parents ...many aunts and uncles ... too many cousins .. and a few friends ... life is better as a result of that journey :)
i am sorry for your losses Kelly! your expression surely achieves the results you intend .. please do not take offence ... but my first thought of my greeting kiss is of my wonder dog Bella ... if you are a pet person you know that thinking of that does not diminish your poem's serious remembrances ... your closing couplet could not capture my experience better ... the vulnerability, honesty and simplicity are perfect for the occasion ... again ... i am sorry for your losses

You keep me smiling, Andrew...thank you! : )
Kelly dear, my Mom passed two days after Christmas
thurty-six years ago. She understood everything that
was said in her presence until she breathed her last
breath, and when the spirit left her body the curtain
moved at the open screened window as it was a balmy day.
I felt her last kiss... Amen... truly, Pat
