Handed Down

Watching as a worm is threaded on a hook,
young eyes, learning,
a new skill, a new experience,
observing patiently, curious.

Suddenly I notice his hands,
clasped behind his back,
fingers woven together,
and a wave of memory washes over me.

Where did he learn this?
Who could have shown him?
This was my grandmother,
again, before my eyes.

She would stand,
hands clasped behind her back,
exactly as my grandson does today.
But she has passed, years before.

He never met her,
never knew her,
but here he stands,
the image of her, again.

AAAAWWWWWW :D This is so adorable! I love it! There is such a deep sentiment within this. I wonder if my nephew will have any of my habits...gosh I hope not :P...he already has my elf ears lol. Very well done. As always I enjoyed reading your work! Thank you for sharing.

I love that you have captured this in a poem this way.
I see it, in my brothers, my children, those things that are not taught, just passed down.
Like the birthmark just under my left butt cheek, I kid you not, it's exactly the same one my grandmother has. Like the mark of the devil. But these personality traits, they are passed down too.
Funny huh? Makes ya think...

This is truly touching, Noel. A pleasure to read and easy on the eyes as it flows so naturally. Lovely!

This is so true, isn't it? Muscle memory held in our genes? I have no logical explanation for it, other than it is really this way. You captured this eloquently in this verse, but did you have to leave it in the tiny default font?

Amazing isn't it when you notice the little things like that ... Sometimes when my younger son speaks I swear I could have been taken back in time to when I was a kid and talking to my younger brother ... That is one of the many beauties of family ...

I like this poem, it is easy to read down the page, it shows the reader the sense of pride woven into the words and that is such a beautiful thing ...
