No one wants to rhyme their poems
the way that rhymes should be
They choose instead to write free verse
which leaves no fun for me.

No one wants to meter poems
the way the feet should go
they choose instead to add more beats
which screws up all the flow.

No one wants to write their poems
and go by all the rules
They choose instead to throw away
the well-known chosen tools.

No one wants to work their poems
but this I must confess
I chose one day to be the same
Am I as bad? Oh yes!

I have no words....my voice is in my awe!! (this made me laugh, for in a way it's quite true in this day and age). Well done!

Thanks very much!
Hey I really like this! There's good humor in it and I do like the rhythm.

Thanks for reading. :)
rules are just suggestions, i love rhyme
i don't know why it gets such a bad rap

i also like free verse which some poetry snobs look down on

people should just do their thing, whatever their thing is

I've experimented a lot with both and they have worked for me in the past. Yes, to each his/her own... read more
The rules should be broken, and with style.

Thanks for your review.
i really like this...been battling the traditional forms for so many years---wild and free---and yet, even with free verse, there is a rhythm...the Beats had it...

and even emily dickinson, my favorite poet, said that rules were meant to be violated.....

clever and amusing, this piece is.
especially with the off syllable count that reminds the reader how hard sometimes it is to adhere to the rules....

Thank you Jacob. I've been struggling a long time and have learned to accept where I am until I prog.. read more
I once saw the following poem on this site:

"Fishy, fishy, fishy,
Swimming in the water.
Bubble, bubble, bubble
SPLASH!"

And it had, like, 20 reviews, all saying how great and brilliant it was. To each their own, I guess, but maybe there ought to be SOME kind of standard for determining what is considered a poem? When does the word "poem" cease to have any meaning? Can I pour up a bowl of cereal in the morning, then hold it up and say, "Hey everybody, look at this poem I just wrote?" Just some thoughts, lol. But I think what you've posted here definitely qualifies. Thanks for sharing

Thank you.
I simply can't bring myself to make a serious poem that abandons all "rules"! They just end up weird. It seems like all of my poems have the same beat and rhyming patterns. Whatever. It works for me!

Hey, whatever works stay with it. thanks.
Rules? We don't need no stinkin' rules. There are all kinds of poetry....as I am certain you know. This one was a cute one with great rhyming, but I usually prefer to write without rhyming. Lydi**

Sometimes I rhyme, sometimes I don't. Thanks a bunch Lydi.
It is true that times have changed ... And not always for the better ... New found freedom does not make for new found talent ... I testify on behalf of this fact in that I am still looking for my talent and can't seem to find it ... That said, you make a good point in poking fun at the reality of today's world that allows us all the freedom to write what our hearts dictate, rather than what the rules dictate, and that in and of itself is a good thing and true expression of that term, freedom of expression ... Very nifty piece and pleasantly enjoyable ...
