The Road

The Road

A Poem by Paul Bell

She watches, and the road drives on
He’s gone, yet the clock keeps ticking
Only in that moment, does she smile
He said it would pass, just like life
You’ve got to live it
No point dancing in the past
Not with the looks of an angel
He was full of s**t, so was she
The grass was long then
With mountains that stole your innocence
Miles from the watching eyes
Where love lasted a whole day
Regrets were hid away
Seemed like yesterday
Now she’s alone with him
So respectable she almost cries
For a marriage full of lies
A pillar to all that died
The mountains stood there
Just for a moment
Looking down on innocence
She watches, and the road drives on
He's gone, yet the clock keeps ticking.

When you love someone but are tied to someone else..."with mountains that stole your innocence"-the primal forces that cannot be denied. Love, sex and Rock and Roll- the devil's triad. i love your imagery and words so curt and cold and sad. She takes what she can get. Awesome!

Thanks Nisreen. That's a great name. Glad you like it.
I think this has to be my favorite of your recent ones. I love the imagery you provide along with the deeper meaning that you convey through once again your annoyingly on point choice of words.
Well done you.

Sorry I haven't been on this website in awhile, so I've missed reading you! (((HUGS))) . . . I like the way you've created a juxtaposition between flowing poetic thought-provoking lines punctuated by more harsh straightforward everyday talk that kinda jolts the reader into reality. So many longterm relationships are full of trade-offs & you've conveyed the feeling of how this can be. Great job!

Aloha Paul, I really enjoyed this. At some stage we all experience this, yet we continue along the road. The highs are temporary but make the journey worth it. Izzy

Very good, Paul. It conveys a very bitter sense of loss.

You slowly drove this poem from happiness to despair while keeping the pace evenly.

Where love lasted a whole day
Regrets were hid away
Seemed like yesterday

Everyone knows that feeling, it's the basis of why humans crave romance so much. It makes all the bullshit disappear, just for a moment, it's a natural high everyone begs for!

Loved this Paul.

You're spot on, that's what gets us out of bed in the morning.
I do like and understand this poem. 15 years in the Army and I was always leaving someone.
"She watches, and the road drives on
He's gone, yet the clock keeps ticking."
The above lines I knew. Most times. Both people knew. A final goodbye. Thank you Paul for sharing the amazing poetry.

Yes I did. Every two years. New location. Nice for a single man. Hard life for the marry people.
Very powerful "He's gone, yet the clock keeps ticking." It seems impossible that the world could move forward when people disappear or your reality changes but the road drives on. I liked "A pillar to all that died / The mountains stood there"

That life thing again. Seems to be the cause of most breakups. But i suppose that's what it is.
