Focus. Focus. Focus. This is what I need to do

Though every time I try I only get more confused

There are too many questions. There are too many thoughts

So when I sit down to figure it out my stomach gets tangled in knots

What am I supposed to do when I can’t seem to get it straight

It’s caused me to become exhausted, I am staying up way too late

 

Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. It’s what gets me through the day

I study and work and at home with the kids I play

I try so hard to keep everything straight while growing my brain

If only these thoughts of mine would quit being a pain

The only thing that seems to helps keep me awake each day

Is the wonderful aroma of coffee when my nerves are all but frayed

 

Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. Something I desperately need

Maybe while I’m sleeping the chaos will be freed

My thoughts will reorganize in my mind up there

Freeing me from the mess, finally playing fair

The idea of just a nice rest fills me with such glee

I think I’m going to go lay down, care to lay with me

"Freeing me from the mess, finally playing fair"...Says so much in so few words. The life we lead these days tends to leave us with much more of too much in less and less of too little time, fraying the edges with exhaustion, that somehow is too active to turn of the engine when it comes time to sleep. Laying there when you should be switching off, with a running list of do's and oh no, I forgot to do's spinning behind your shuttered eyes, lighting up your neurons like fourth of july, when all that you long for is the bliss of nothingness sleep.

I know so many who do. I had problems with it because my brain was just non stop that day too and I wasn't sure if I really liked it, that is actually how it got the title it did. It just seems to be chaotic to me haha But yes sleep is amazing if only I could get enough of it.

No time... I work forty hours take care of them and am taking 21 credit hours!!! There is not time for sleep lol I think Im averaging about three hours right now

Very true write....We are all getting in the way of chaos....There are so many things we have to do everyday, even when we go to bed at night we make plans for the next day how to handle the next day's heavy work schedule....Sometimes we lost our way, our head gets stuck and we need a little break from the world of chaos and just little rest or a power nap can give us the necessary refreshment.....Another superb work on modern human life....Greatly pointed out some key things.....Full ratings....

Love the repetition in the beginning of the verses, and the structure of your poem. I find the last line the most interesting cause it's almost like you are speaking to the reader "care to lay with me?" Haha. Nice touch at the end.

Thank you :) I am glad that you liked it, I am still unsure as to what to think of it, like what is my message and what is the purpose of this poem, I usually try to find meaning in the pieces I write even if it is something as simple as excitement and this one just is not my norm. I do like the repetition like you said, thank you for the review :)

At least to me, I think the purpose of the poem is the overall struggle of daily work. Where we find ourselves wanting to focus, and attempting to do our best. We are so caught up in life, and the chaos isn't just what is surrounding us but also in our heads. And the final verse is the acceptance that sometimes, we just need a little rest, or a little fun. Why else are we working so hard? Anyway, that's how I interpret this. I teach HS kids so life is chaotic and I can relate hahahha

That makes sense, my life is nothing but chaos right now, sometimes when I write I don't even know what I am writing until it is 3/4 of the way done or completely finished. What do you teach? My goal is to eventually become a teacher, I am still not sure what age group I want to teach and thought it best to just get an Associates in everything and master in primary and secondary, maybe by the time I finish all of that I will know what I want to teach haha.

I teach 9th grade English. I used to run a poetry club but I changed schools. Sometimes it's good to write without a destination at hand. Just write and let it take you where it takes you. You'll be surprised at the end result. =)

I often am surprised, I write all the time, it is like a meditation for me. Whats your take on teaching English? That means you can yell at me for my horrible grammar!

Teaching English is probably one of the most difficult, stressful things ever. With all the grading of essays and reading. That being said, when you know you've helped someone become a better writer, or when the class understands symbolism out of nowhere, it is the best feeling. Don't worry about the grammar thing. I only look at it if it's being graded and I'm holding a red pen lol

LOL well that's good to know... with that being said I may bug you sometime and have you recheck something of mine for one of my class assignments haha. I am sure English is a difficult class to teach. It was my favorite class in school though, I have my 8th grade teacher to thank for that. She pushed me to become a better well rounded writer. As a teacher just knowing you have reached your students is a huge accomplishment, and for 9th grade you have your work cut out for you I am sure. I may not be a teacher in a school but I work at the college library and am constantly helping students with their papers and I have three kids so I am always teaching them, it is actually because of all of the kids I have helped that made me change my field of study over into education.
