Loose Change

Loose Change

A Poem by Robin
"

memories

"

innocence and a smile

" come back again  "

thirty eight cents

rattled in my palms

holding memories

the quarter was  shiny and new

1966

the nickel , a treasure

a Buffalo

I would trade with my Dad

and three pennies

stamped memories in tarnished copper

of when I as five , eight

and the beginning of

and the end of

that day

over cast and grey

we cut across a field and jumped the fence

into your backyard

sanctuary

where everything changed  ...

a blur of questions

and flashing lights

shields

of men in blue

but I saw her body

I saw the blood

and I heard you cry ...

A cinematic, scenic kind of writing; a simple, harmless object triggering a hazy dive through memory, and a flashback into a childhood interrupted. It's fascinating how such things work on the mind; how such trivial things take on such meaning and weight.

The details of what is left undocumented here is I think what gives it resonance; creating the effect of a kind of kaleidoscopic time tunnel through which memory and soul are diverted in a moment. Atmospheric.

This turned from innocent to noir without effort. This is practically perfect.

This seemed like just an innocent childhood memory at the beginning. Then, the domino effect started up, bringing back a painful memory. I know this feeling all to well. You just never know what seemingly unimportant thing will start it up. Great writing, Robin!

Small remnants of our past can evoke cherished memories...It's amazing how memories are so vividly conjured by something such as a coin.
You have weaved a magnificent story of innocence and mystery in this intriguing poem. This is Superb writing!

This is turly mysterious and leaves nothing but feeling which brings to the root and is the remedy for memory. The root is only steps down away we take in our head.

The price of memories Robin, the coin of words, parables in the myth-making of perception and attachment.
