The Skin I'm In

The Skin I'm In

A Poem by Rita L. Sev

The skin I'm in
is what you see
this outer shell
is not all of me

So quick to judge
by what's on display
sure you know me
without hearing my say

Before, I would show
only what was expected
Certain my me-ness
would leave me rejected

Now older and wiser
I reveal yang and yin
finally at peace
with the skin I'm in

I'm loving the poetic license you took here, nothing else would have worked quite as nice. It's so true, it takes time to be comfortable in our own 'skin' and let our true selves all hang out....by the time we get it all figured out, it starts falling apart. Haha, not you, you're still a youngster. I really like this one Rita...good message.

Thank you for your kind words (made up by someone at some time!) :)
Great Rita and very true. We learn to accept what we are as we get older, but even as adults we are guilty of judging the book by its cover. Well written.

Welcome always Ms. Rita.
the titular phrase is really catchy, and I love that you ended it with that line too.
haha, did you have to invent me-ness?
I love the tension between knowing you aren't what you seem to other people, but also accepting how they see you (however false that may be), I imagine talking to imaginary kids I might have one day about that very issue. I'll definitely point them to this poem! :)
