Warmly Haunted

As you go out into the world, expect company...

In your Tomorrow dwelling

live phantom recollections

They’ll someday whisper endlessly,

these spectral reflections

 

Have no fear, they mean no harm;

you are their only host

It’s just Today, and all before ~

your memories, your ghost

 

As time moves on, you’ll understand

this haunting is a gift

That takes you warmly by the heart

so you’ll not go adrift.

I wrote this for my niece, who is graduating from high school this week.

I was once told "the living are haunted" By choices made mostly, but we can learn, and make better decisions learn to think before we just react. Memories, though haunting can be beneficial because of the very fact of their spookiness;they force one to act in such a way so as to prevent their resurfacing. I hadn't seen anybody make the analogy of memories to ghosts before, that was very brilliant. Well written...again.

I like how you say "this haunting is a gift that takes you warmly by the heart so you'll not go adrift" as if to say being haunted by certain memories are not necessarily always a bad thing, but it is a haunting memory that will keep you in check. A haunting memory that will keep you right on track rather than straying you away from your goals. I wish your niece well in her future, graduating high school was such an exhilarating high!
