I love you

I love you

A Poem by Sam

I love you

He whispered it every morning
as he rolled out of bed
“I love you too” is what she said.

I love you

Sometimes it was missing
But it was never completely gone,
Only temporarily withdrawn.

I love you

It was said with a cracked voice
And tearful eyes
But never once said with despise.

I love you

Signed under names
Or sprawled out on little notes
That was their quote.

I love you

Those words ended each call
And every sleepless night.
To the darkness it was their light.

I love you

Three little words
But to them it was their whole world

I hate to break it to you, but "despise" is not a noun, and claiming poetic licence on it would be acknowledging that it's a forced rhyme (and forced rhyming is a faux-pas). This is superbly written in every other way imaginable - honestly! It's just that rhyme that's wonky. Well done!

A beautiful tribute to your parents. Congratulations to them on rearing a fine human being and good poet. Simple but powerful words and phrases. Thank you for sharing your work. I look forward to reading more.
