A Possum of Worldly Descent

A Possum of Worldly Descent

A Poem by willweb

There was a possum of worldly descent,

gathering diamonds and things it had spent

Chasing a catfish down dragonfly row,

'long side a river, so swiftly its flow

Singing a song it had learned on the farm,

lyrics of barley and licorice charm

Soft in the middle and furry indeed,

taught by the farmer who planted the seed

Laughed at an aardvark with tangerine pants,

filling its pockets with yesterday's ants

Climbed up a staircase that led to the sky,

waving at blue jays just now flying by

Chewed on a cabbage it found by the gate,

swallowed it quickly, for time it was late

Sat down alone, which was normal you see,

crying those tears as it hoped it could be

Somebody's friend that he never could find,

merely a possum, just pay him no mind

He'll get along, it's just something to do

and if he passes right in front of you

Maybe just smile and tell him hello,

he might be somebody you'd like to know

Or let him be without well wishes sent,

for he's just a possum of worldly descent

I appreciate your time and comment. Thank you for stopping by
This could have been written by Dali. Lots of 'Possums' in this world of course and a smile or a passing hello will always work wonders.

Beccy.

Happy you enjoyed this my friend.
Quite a quirky work with depths to it, author willweb. Despite not knowing much about possums, from what I've heard, a creature that could be as dangerous as it is beneficial to others' momentary needs fits the perfect description of the spirit animal of humanity. And indulging in mortal favours while ridiculing others and chasing heights? That's humanity alright.
