What's Depression Like?

What's Depression Like?

A Poem by Silent Wolf
"

So, this is my personal experience.

"

“What’s depression like?” They ask.

It’s everyday wearing a simple mask,

Hiding the way you feel

Behind a smile that’s not real.

But it’s more than that, it’s like being alive,

Without any motivation to strive.

It’s fighting not to cry,

To keep your tear ducts dry.

It’s not being able to tell a friend,

Even though they may help mend.

Because the fear that they will turn away

Is far greater than the hope that they will stay.

It’s like drowning, the air in your chest turning to stone,

But everybody around you is breathing, lost in their own little zone.

Not knowing what to do, no matter what you say,

Because it ends up being wrong anyway.

It’s being put on a “happy pill” that makes you smile,

But it only lasts for a little while.

And once it’s gone, never to return,

It’s something else’s turn.

It’s always feeling alone,

Not liking anybody’s tone.

The sarcastic, snide and scornful.

The mocking, moaning and mournful.

You’d think people would be willing to assist,

But let me tell you, they normally resist.

You say we shouldn’t be afraid, we should have no fear,

But look at what people say at just a single tear.

Silent Wolf
You can agree or disagree, but this was how I felt during my days of depression. I've gotten better, but I felt like people should understand what it's like.

Wow..... that's some real emotion, and I'm not talking about the song (thumbs up if you know the reference). The rhyme sheme I like; it gives it a voice in your head as you read, and it's grips you from the starting line. That's real truth you speak there on the feeling of depression, a feeling that far too many people experience every day. What you did here though, you pulled off a poem on depression that makes the reader not only feel the emotions of it, but also to smile at the end due to the quality. Keep doing your thing with the writing Silent Wolf. :) You got a fan in me.

sounds like you were in a bad place, and found your way out congratulations. Depression isn't easy to overcome. This poem is direct and simple. It comes from the heart and that's why it's so effective in it's meaning. Great Job Silent Wolf

I'm glad that your are better, I have also been there and its not a very nice place to be. I enjoyed the first two lines " What’s depression like?” They ask.
It’s everyday wearing a simple mask" they were beautifully written they were designed to pull the reader into the poem and the last two lines were the perfect resolution, the rhyme scheme also complimented the poem very well.

Both Ocean and myself have read this, it is so beautifully written showing what depression is, we both have the troubles with it as well and it isn't easy to deal with at times but this poem it is written in such depth that anyone could read this and see what you mean

If we fall and break something people rush to help. If we are bed-ridden because of some illness like cancer people are there to help make life easier. If we are depressed, however, it is a different story. Depression still carries a stigma with it and many people believe that a simple pill is the fix; unfortunately it is not that simple. Hopefully, someday, we can pull of that "mask" and not have to pretend. Thanks for opening up!

Exactly. Hopefully someday...
Wow, that was beautiful. I think it would've drawn anyone in. And those who can relate and get depressed often (*raises hand*) we can totally relate. I hide behind masks everyday, and I am so terrified of just coming out and telling people how I feel. It's simple, yet long. Long not in a wordy way, but in the depth of the words (coming from the point of view of someone understands) and how much it tells you if you listen outside of the stanzas. I think it's a great way to say how you feel and to educate others. Truly beautiful. This one's going in my favorites.
