Rebel

Rebel

A Chapter by Bekah B

Your way of life
Is a political statement-
So what you're saying is
The government should let us die.
Well I've got to stop you there
Because I don't believe in killing-
Whatever the reason.
And neither do you.
I'm curious
Why the atheist
Searches for God
Why the socialist
Gives up on his community
Why the musician
Stops short a melody
Why the poet
Burns his words
Why the rebel
Doesn't fight.
You were always a rebel-
Lacking a cause.
You wanted to be loved and accepted-
But you were that rebel.
You were a loudmouth/lunatic/poet/musician-
And you wished you could change.
But you cannot be what you are not.
And you're not like everyone else.
Look me in the eyes
Tell me you wish you'd died
Because you'll be lying.
When you want to drown
You don't say,
"It would be nice if someone had the foresight
To notice me drowning
And come help me"-
You just scream.
You didn't scream
You called for me-
Everyone-
Anyone-
And we showed you how it feels
To be loved.
Rebel,
Have you found your cause?
Can you lead the opposition
Into a raging battle
And win the endless war
Without a sngle drop of blood?
That's the rebel that you are
That's the man you will become-
If I have any say.

I don't believe in killing-
Whatever the reason.
Take your own advice
You're a victim by default
But a killer by choice.
Rebel,
If you need a cause
I need a champion.
Can you lead the opposition
Into a raging battle?
Can you tear a country down
With the sound of your voice?
Can you shatter the ground
With a few penned lines?
Can you convince us evil
Only lives in our minds?

The rebel you were
Spoke of peace
And spilled blood.
Now the rebel you are
Will win this war.
The man you'll become
Will be a desperado
An outlaw
A renegade
A rebel-
The kind whose story starts with,
"A tough guy walks into a bar
And buys everybody a drink"
And ends with,
"So he packed his guitar and his harmonica
Onto the back of his Harley
Next to the notebooks-
And he rode away
In search of a new town to brutalize
With the concept of peace."

Very deep commentary, developing and unfolding as it goes along, creating this troubled character. Highly engaging work. I really enjoyed it.

Nice one. I like the way several of these seem to tell a story, slowly developing the emotion and character as they go along. The slow burn of it all is fantastic.
