Love

Love

A Story by Braden Freeman
"

This work presents my understanding of love. Although love is something human beings experience in their lives, it is not always easy to comprehend. I will attempt to shine some light on the idea.

"

Love is what everyone searches for in their lives. I think it could even be argued that the hole in our hearts that we attempt to fill through money and possessions is only healed by love. I have watched relatives madly pursue money and success, and some of them actually did reach their goals and satisfy their desires. My father just recently retired from his career in law, a successful career. He lives in a very nice home, has many possessions, and still has several business connections. He worked very hard throughout his career to gain wealth, status, and the satisfaction of knowing that he had made something of his life. And now that it is clear he has made it, something still escapes him, a need which cannot be met by worldly success.

This need my father has, which I also share in my young life, is the need for love. In today's world we do not always receive love in the marketplace, so I do not think it is surprising that my father could not find it through his work. Even in my field, where I work with homeless people, I do not feel the kind of connection and love I should from workers in a helping profession. Admittedly it is hard to be concerned with matters of the heart when we are busy, or when everybody is racing as fast as they can to pursue some practical end. However, love can be reborn in society, and in the business world.

Love is at the centre of the human heart, and one of the reasons businessmen seem to lack it is because they are too much concerned with the mind. This is not to say that the mind should not be used at work, but I do believe the heart has a place in the world as well. When people get to know their colleagues, when they get to know their fears and struggles, then they start walking the path of love. Human beings are not robots, and even though we try to block out all emotions in favor of utility and efficiency, we never can succeed. By listening to our own feelings and caring for our inner wounds, we connect with our own hearts. And when we bring our hearts into contact with other hearts in the world, work is more harmonious and society slowly heals.

I think this is very interesting and I think you bring up some very true notions of love. The idea though the businessmen and the business not having love is something that I disagree with. I think about my dad, a businessmen and I know that he isn't so concerned with his job to forget about love and to not love. And I also think it's certainly something not confined to the business world, people in many different confessions can put so much focus on it instead of love. I feel that in this you confined it a bit too much to the business word and I don't think businessmen are any more likely to love others or to not love others than people in other professions. But anyway that's just what I think. I still really enjoyed reading this, I liked what you said about knowing others fears and struggles and I think that's a very true point. The last line was a very poignant one to end on.
