Chapter 2

And The Beat Goes On…

Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon”, Keith Jarrett’s “God Bless The Child”, Yes’ “Roundabout”, Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rappers Delight”, Prince’s…uh…anything (and thank GOD he goes by his real name nowadays.  Try writing that symbol).  Do you know these songs?  Do you like these songs?  Have you memorized every lyric, every note?  Fantabulous!  You have too much time on your hands.  Just kidding.  Just kid-ding.  Anyway, knowing these songs are to your advantage.  Why?  Because….come one, now….be-caussssssssse…now, don’t act like you don’t know….be-cause….theyyyyy…arrrrrre…..come on…..TIME SAVERS!!!!  Yes, yes, you are the man or the wo-man!

Music is helpful for those who haven’t memorized STAR WARS or “Raiders of The Lost Ark” or “STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan” or “Batman” like me – oops, I mean…uh…SOMEBODY ELSE, like somebody else memorized these movies.  Hey, quit laughing.  I said I had a life.

OK, here’s the breakdown: Your alarm goes off at 6:00AM and instead of hitting the snooze button you hit the “Alarm OFF” button.  At 6:55AM, your body goes into panic mode, jolts you awake and moves you from bedroom to bathroom in record time.  Now, you only have 45 minutes to shampoo, shower, brush, dress and dash to work or school!  How will you know how much time has passed so you won’t be late?  How?  HOW?!!!

Wait.  What is that kick-a*s song by Billy Joel?  Oh, yeah! “Pressure”!  That, plus “It’s Still Rock ‘n’ Roll To Me” would give me 10 minutes to shower, brush, deodorize, slap on a funky fragrance and begin the dressing process.  Now it’s 7:70 AM, 33 minutes to go.  You get the idea, right?  Whistling your favorite tune is your way of keeping time.  Here are some examples from a few of my favorite songs:

SONG                                    ARTIST                 ALBUM                          TIME DURATION

“Shake It Off”              Mariah Carey       “The Emancipation of Mimi”            4 minutes

“Shake Your Pants”            CAMEO               “Cameosis”                              6 min, 30  sec

“Sexy MF”                   Prince                     “Symbol”                                              5 min, 45 sec

“Like That”                   Black Eyed Peas   “Monkey Business”                      4 min, 45 sec
