A Matter of Trust

A Matter of Trust

A Poem by Chris Shaw

What credence does one hold in trust?
Like gold it gleams, like dust it falls.
Like Humpty Dumpty off the wall.

When broken what a costly fix,
when everything is smashed to bits,
what say you can it be regained?

Once wounds inflicted cause such pain
which festers worse by night it seems,
disturbing sleep, invading dreams.

Can all be salvaged, all repaired?
That crater once it's blown its crust
and hell meets air in love's despair.

Could'st thou drinketh from that cup
or spill its contents and give up?

There will always remain the question if this is worth saving when we are assaulted by broken trust. It hurts a great deal and can't easily go away. You've mentioned good points: Lack of sleep, despair...

Time will tell but sometimes time goes on forever.

You've penned a good poem here, Chris.

When trust is broken what is lost?
Humpty Dumpty knows the cost.
When trust is broken no use to beg,
at the bottom of the wall lies an egg,
who trusted one to have his back
and was unprepared for the attack.

A great bit of writing, Chris. The pain is palpable. Forgiveness is possible...but the relationship will never be the same.

Many thanks Ted and for your poetical response which was delightful to read.

Chris
You have stated in powerful terms how it feels to have one's trust broken & how hard it is to get that back. Many relationships are crippled by this very thing, well-illustrated in your words. Many underestimate how long it can take to trust again after a deep betrayal. Sometimes it feels like giving up would be the better/easier way, so you ending question is a gut-wrenching one to ask! So very true Chris, when distrust and dishonesty have risen its ugly head, it's far too hard to put it away and forget about it. It really does take over and make you doubt anything else someone says again. Like the old saying once bitten, twice shy.

Chris -
My goodness - how very very true! A betrayed trust maybe forgiven, but I know from bitter
experience it is never,. ever forgotten. I wrote of this in my posted here "The Cost".

Take care - Dave

A very nice poem with a even more good topic. You have wonderfully described trust and I loved the first three lines. Trust is really important and easy to develop in a relationship initially but is equally difficult to maintain it throughout. Great work frnd :)

Chris,
A beautiful poem that also holds betrayal up to the light. Your 4th stanza is quite interesting . . . an allusion to a volcano? A powerful metaphor for the ruin such powerful forces can cause . . . in nature and in the human heart. Oh . . . the bitter cup we sometimes must drink from . . . can there be reconciliation?! I appreciate that you seem not to direct our thoughts beyond the end of the poem. Congratulations!

oh wow i love this, you are a rhyming queen you could make a rhyme out of cement mixing instructions! amazing as usual cadence as well and your subject matter is so personal to us... it relates in such a way as it is you and the readers thoughts intertwined a very fine trick to do. The bunny has trust issues too... but has a bad brain so forgiveness comes in time but at a certain threshold the black stain permeates even my bad processing and i reach a point where i cant even look at the person and then the bunny is gone

It takes everything to build up trust, and even less than a second to break it off like it never existed. I like this one, indeed a 'costly fix' and even then, damaged beyond repair. I think trust matters more in a relationship than love...
Good write, this one.

when you look at the animal kingdom, building trust between a wilderness animal and a human takes forever and once broken is rarely repairable.
Humans seem to be, usually, more accommodating but a broken love is a tricky thing.
Hope this is no more than a poem
