Saturday Cake Bake

Saturday Cake Bake

A Poem by Chris Shaw

happiness came in stone coloured  crockery
in a pudding bowl with a wooden spoon
with each stirring of something special

creamiest of mixtures worked and poured
into baking tins placed high on oven racks
timed to rise to light and airy perfection

kitchen aromas drifted into the sitting room
where Ernie sat in his comfy chair
busy making roll ups in front of a red glow fire

tissue thin paper sandwiched a pinch of baccy
pressed and rolled into shape then finished with
spit lick before being stored in an old tin

but the best bit of all for a seven year old fidget
the remains left in the bowl of plenty
handed over by nan with a smile and a wink

Yes who doesn’t love the last lickings?, almost every child that I know, what a nice take family togetherness and warmth and love for each other….and it’s also fun to cook together as well…..and then Ernie busy making his rollups and gently putting them in a tin……the glow of the fire tops it off….warm a cozy Chris!

Gee
What a lovely childhood memory Christine. Time spent with nan and grandad.
Can smell the cakes baking and picture the old fella in his chair preparing his ciggies. In poetry speak, "quite delightful my dear :))"
Hope you are well Christine

This is a nice childhood memory of a saturday spent baking cake. My favourite line has to be
"in a pudding bowl with a wooden spoon
with each stirring of something special
creamiest of mixtures worked and poured" it makes me visualize the buttery smooth batter and i used to lick the cake batter of the spoon after. This is a sweet poem

My pleasure.
i had to ask my friend, google, just what is baccy?
then i reread and had an aaaaaha moment
i like the descriptive term 'spit lick' ... i will think of it when i roll one up! HA!
a comfortable write that takes me back to great memories of my grandmother baking one of my favorite cakes (other than german chocolate)
mohnkuchen ... german poppy seed cake
now i have to go bake one
thank you

THIS IS what I call WARMTH!! Chris! thank YOU PLENTY for sharing this with us! I can't express how much love, warmth, safety I felt from first word to the last, I close my eyes and I can imagine all the scenes.
"the remains left in the bowl of plenty" Believe ME, though I am now a grown up, still they are my FAVORITE! Hugs of happiness to Ernie and You, our loving caring Lady*
