Want Ads

Want Ads

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Want Ads

the newspaper print

faded in the flood,

tears falling through the roof

yesterday's headlines

were about us,

about love

today as the rain pelts the tiles

i think of you,

and drop towels on the carpet

soaking up as much memory

as allowed,

before the rainbow accents the sky

and i find a long vowel

in the word, "missing"

two of them

just like there were two of us

but now just drips from the ceiling

a life that needs repairs

and a hope love insurance

will cover the damages,

thank God the classified section

stayed dry

even if i couldn't.

seen in the classifieds (NY Times, no doubt): "well intention man-poet seeks female with big heart, loves art of words and haiku, and has a dry carpet, meet me for coffee and verse at the corner cafe at noon for clear skies and good headlines...

wow Jacob, you made the Times, that means its a poet's poem, sad and yet touching to read...

the sadness i felt grew as i read ... such a sad sad picture and scent of wet newspapers and sagging ceiling ... i see a man standing in all that not quite knowing what to do ... maybe get a can for the leaks ..make some coffee or sandwich .. but he's just stuck there soaking water from the carpet .. very moving .. makes me want to reach out to this guy somehow ... heavy sad for sure

I like the image you created here a lot. Many words relating to water creating a sad, but in the end a little more hopeful background.

Beautiful word play Jacob, likening our lot in life to the weather and classified ads in a way that impresses more on a second read. Hope you have good insurance :)

What a great poem! I really liked the use of newspaper headlines to symbolize a love that once was. Good job! :)
