A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

books of poetry in a box in the attic of my mind

wanted to be a philanthropist poet

but couldn't afford to give away the words

even though on the sly

my heart let them go for free

The words do not really belong to us....they belong to the muse and to the reader. Great metaphor. LydI**

true, they really don't....
thank you, Lydi.

That damn heart will always undermine the poet's shrewdness of wanting to hold on to those words. Truly, this is brilliant!

How lucky for us that your heart let them go for free - it's been a real joy to read your poetry on this site so please keep the dust off the box and out of the attic! - and continue to share them :)

Poets like to touch and people that read poets like to be touched, a beautiful symbiosis...

Dead poets would probably agree with your reasoning. Seems most had to expire before they were truly appreciated.

Thought provoking! I think there is an element of philanthropy in most good poets, Jacob. Like the evangelist's of life, we share our words, on the hope of them touching someone, somewhere; what is art if it does not evoke some kind of emotional response? The title hauled in into this one!

(wanted to be a philanthropist poet but couldn't afford to give away the words) Most of us can relate to these words Jacob and there are times writers can't NOT write...we are driven to spill our hearts strengths and weaknesses to prove to ourselves we are whole. I love your writing my friend. ~Sharon

being a humanist will only take you so far...
i think we'd destroy ourselves in the end.

like the idea of a philanthropist poet-
we all get caught in utopian ideas i think.
