Specters of Solitude

Specters of Solitude

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Specters of Solitude

the rusted armor creaks

silently sojourning heart

eclipsed by years of ruined rainbows

storms pass, and solace grows into soliloquy

as we speak of nothing to no one in particular

the dreams of "happy ever after"

become fallen heroes

Hamlets of mistrust

suicides of passionate illusions once held

and when those hopeful rainbows are no longer visible

we find ourselves bathed in a silence

once thought to be comfortable

when love didn't need voice.

I think two of the most powerful lines in this are: "suicides of passionate illusions once held," and "silence once thought to be comfortable when love didn't need voice."

Those lines bring it home for me. I can feel the great loss in both of them.
