Be like us

Be like us

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Be like us

I escape into a world of

invisible ink sprouting wings

and legalizing

the eagle eying its prey,

another nation sworn to our Liberty....

she is heavy, she's my sister

and everyone has to get along with her

like her, be for her as

she raises her hand on Ellis Island

and points to another country

to which we must fly...

the prey waiting with unease

they don't know how to greet us

since they didn't invite us

guests who overstay

converse in persuasive tone

add up the casualties

get on the plane

and wave at what we did

like a relative who thinks

we have rewoven the quilt

of another nation,

so we can hang the result

on our wall

pretending it is art.

i got this one jacob! amazing insight!
i've been of the opinion for a while now that America is imploding & most of its citizens don't even realise it..... they're too busy kissing & stroking their guns.
have a good weekend.

The U.S is the greatest country, but yes, we do have some destruction in our wake. If the fathers of our country could see what we've become I wonder what they would think.

Another compelling write, J.

‘So we can the result on our wall, pretending it is art’.

This is such a profound, well written poetic piece. You do well to describe the wavering and bumpiness of our nation in such a wonderful sounding poem that grasps for your attention throughout the the whole thing. That last line, to me, is just particularly breathtaking. It works so well in the context and is wonderful just on its own. Thank you for sharing.

The French had great hopes for the United States as made evident by their gift. It was also made evident by their citizens and navy pulling our bacon out of the fire more than once. America owes a greater debt to France than any other nation. Benjamin Franklin was well aware of that fact. But the United States has as many skeletons in her closet as any other nation, perhaps more. The great American genocide and the obliteration of entire peoples and cultures, for example. I like the trilogy song John Kay wrote about the USA, "Monster Suicide, America." I also liked the book Pulitzer Prize winning author Stay Schiff wrote, "A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France and the American Revolution." I think many countries envy America for various reasons but many of those may be misguided. This was an interesting write, Jacob. I enjoyed the read.
